Surah al-Tahreem (Surah 66: Revelation order 107)

God had forgiven prophet for his mistake

  • O you prophet, why do you prohibit what God has made lawful for you to seek pleasure of your wives? And God is Forgiving, Merciful (66:1). Certainly, God has decreed for you dissolution of your oaths. And God is your Protector, and He is the Knower, the Wise (66:2).
  • Note: God is only One who makes what is lawful for us, while the prophet has been warned to prohibit something what was not unlawful to just please his wives.

Prophet’s wives were warned to be faithful to him

  • The prophet had confided a matter to one of his wives, then when she has informed of it, and God has made it known to him, he has made known a part of it and has avoided a part from (it). Then when he has informed her of it, she has told, “Who informed you of this?” He said, “Has informed me the Knower, the Cognizant.” (66:3). If you both repent to God, then certainly, your hearts have inclined, but if you support one another against him, then indeed, God – He is his Protector, and so is Gabriel and the righteous believers, and the angels are his helpers after that (66:4). It may have been his Lord, if he has divorced you that He will substitute for him wives better than you being submitters, and believers, and obedient are repentant, worshiping, fasting, previously married and virgins (66:5).
  • Note: God has been Protector of prophet, while the angels and the believers were his helpers. So, his wives were asked to repent to God for their mistakes and to be faithful to him.

The believers will protect themselves and their families from Hell

  • O you who have believed, you shall protect yourselves and your families from a Fire – its fuel is people and stones, around it there will be stern powerful angels – they do not disobey God whatever He commands them, and they do whatever they are commanded (66:6).
  • Note: There is no way to escape Hell. So, those who believe in God and His scripture should prepare them for the Hereafter doing the righteous deeds and should also ask their family members to do the same to avoid the punishment of Hell.

There will be no excuse for the disbelievers on a day of the Judgment

  • O you who have disbelieved, you do not make excuse today. You will only be recompensed for what you have done to accomplish (66:7).
  • Note: The disbelievers in God and His scripture will be recompensed for the evil deeds what they have done on a day of the Judgment.

Paradise for the gooddoers upon sincere repentance to God

  • O you who have believed, you shall repent to God a sincere repentance. It may have been your Lord that He may remove your evil deeds from you and may admit you into gardens flowing the rivers of their underneath. A day God will not disgrace the prophet and those who had believed with him. Their light will radiate before of them and on their right; they will say, “Our Lord, perfect our light for us, and forgive for us; indeed, You have power over everything.” (66:8).
  • Note: Those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds upon sincere repentance to God will be allowed to admit into gardens following the rivers of their underneath. Their light will radiate before of them and on their right.

Destination of the disbelievers is Hell

  • O you prophet, you shall strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and shall be stern on them. And their abode is Hell, and it has been miserable is the destination (66:9).
  • Note: The prophet was asked to be stern on the disbelievers and the hypocrites as their destination in Hell.

God has set an example with wives of Noah and Lot

  • God has set an example for those who have disbelieved are wife of Noah and wife of Lot. They had been married to two of our righteous servants, but they had betrayed them, so, they could not help them in anything against God, and it had been said to them, “Enter the Fire with the comers.” (66:10).
  • Note: Wife of Noah and wife of Lot who were disbelievers were told to enter Hell, even both of them were married to the two righteous believers and they cannot help them anyway.

God has set an example with wife of Pharaoh and Mary daughter of Imran

  • And God has set an example for those who have believed is wife of Pharaoh, when she said, “My Lord, build a home for me at You in the Paradise, and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and save me from the people of the wrongdoers.” (66:11). And Mary, daughter of Imran who had guarded her chastity, so we had breathed into it from our Spirit. And she had believed in words of her Lord and His scriptures, and she had been the obedient (66:12).
  • Note: Wife of Pharaoh and Mary daughter of Imran were believers and obedient to God were saved.

Surah al-Tahreem (The Prohibition) is a short surah consisting of 12 verses dealing with prophet’s and prophet’s wives mistakes, prophet’s wives were warned to be faithful to him, the believers will protect them and their families, no excuse for the disbelievers on a day of Judgment, Paradise is for the gooddoers upon sincere repentance, destination of the believers is Paradise and destination of the disbelievers is Hell, God has set an example with wife of Noah and wife of Lot to be disbelievers while He has set an example with wife of Pharaoh and Mary daughter of Imran to be the believers highlighting that God is only One who can make thing lawful or unlawful, those who have committed crimes but upon having sincere repentance to God and doing the righteous deeds thereafter they have been given opportunity to enter the Paradise, the believers are those who believe in God and His scriptures, and the believers will protect themselves from the Hellfire and also their families.
