Surah al-Mumtahanah (Surah 60: Revelation order 91)

Do not make friends with the disbelievers

  • O you who have believed, you do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies offering of love towards them, while certainly, they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth, driving out the messenger and yourselves that you believe in God, your Lord, if you have come to strive in My way and seeking My pleasure, concealing of love towards them, while I am Knower of what you conceal and what you declare. And whoever does it from you, then certainly, he has strayed off the even path (60:1). If they can control you, they would be enemies for you, and will extend their hands and their tongues with the evil against you, while they have desired that you would disbelieve (60:2).
  • Note: Those who have believed will not make friends with the disbelievers. They are enemies of God and enemies of the believers, while the disbelievers will do everything to make them disbelievers.

Neither relatives nor children can benefit on a day of the Resurrection

  • Your relatives and your children will not benefit you on a day of the Resurrection, He will judge between yourselves, while God is Seer of what you do (60:3).
  • Note: We are individually responsible for our own deeds, and there is no help from relatives or children on a day of the Judgment, while God will judge as a Seer of everything.

God has cited an example in Abraham for us to worship God alone

  • Certainly, there has been a good example for you in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, “Indeed, we are in dissociation from you and from what you worship other than God. We have denied in you, and there has appeared the enmity and the hatred forever between us and you until you believe in God alone,” except saying of Abraham to his father, “Surely, I will ask forgiveness for you, but I do not have power of anything for you from God. Our Lord, upon You we have put trust, and to You we have turned, and to You is the final return (60:4). Our Lord, do not make us a test for those who have disbelieved, and forgive for us. Indeed, You are the Almighty, the Wise.” (60:5). Certainly, there has been a good example for you in them for whoever has done to hope for God and the Last Day, while whoever turns away, then indeed, God – He is the Rich, the Praiseworthy (60:6).
  • Note: God has cited an example in Abraham and those who had been with him to worship God alone for dissociation of the idol worshipers and what they had worshiped, is also a good example for those who hope God and the Last Day being God is the Rich who can only give us what we need from His bounty.

Do not ally those who fight you and drive you out of homes

  • It has been God that He can put love between you and those among them you have been enemies. And God is Powerful, and God is Forgiving, Merciful (60:7).God does not forbid you from those who do not fight you in the religion, nor drive you out of your homes to deal with them and to act just with them. Indeed, God loves the equitable (60:8). God only forbids you from those who fight you in the religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and have supported of your expulsion that you make them allies. And whoever makes them allies, then those – they are the wrongdoers (60:9).
  • Note: God has forbidden the believers to ally those who fight against them and drive them out of their homes, and if they do, they are the wrongdoers, while He can establish love between the believers and their enemies.

The believing women are not lawful for the disbelieving men

  • O you who have believed, when there has come to you the believing women as emigrants, then you shall test them. God is Knower of their faith. Then if you have learned them being believers, then you do not return them to the disbelievers. They are not lawful for them (disbeliever husbands), nor are they lawful for them (emigrant women). And you shall give them what they have spent, and there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their bridal dues. And you do not hold in marriage with the disbelieving women. And you shall ask them what you have spent, and they shall ask what they have spent. That is God’s judgment; He judges between yourselves, while God is Knower, Wise (60:10). And if has gone from you any of your wives to the disbelievers, then you have taken back that you shall give to those from whom have gone their wives like what they had spent, while you shall fear God, the One with Him you are believers (60:11).
  • Note: The believers will test the believing women who has come to them as emigrants and will not return them to their disbelieving husbands upon learning them to be believers, but they will give their husbands what they have spent for them, and can marry them upon giving them proper dowries, while they will also enforce to get back what they have spent for their women who have gone to the disbelievers to establish the equitable judgment in God’s system.

To test pledges of the believing women before to trust them

  • O you prophet, when there has come to you the believing women pledging to you on that they will neither associate anything with God, nor will they steal, nor will they commit adultery, nor will they kill their children, nor will they bring of slander they invent it between their hands and their feet, nor will they disobey you in what is right, you shall accept their pledge and shall ask forgiveness of God for them. Indeed, God is Forgiving, Merciful (60:12).
  • Note: Prophet was asked to become sure about the pledges of the believing women who had come to him, then he should accept their pledges and ask forgiveness of God for them.

Do not ally a people God has angered upon them

  • O you who have believed, you do not ally a people God has angered upon them. Indeed, they have despaired of the Hereafter as that has despaired the disbelievers from the people of the graves (60:13).
  • Note: The believers will not ally a people God has angered upon them as they have despaired of the Hereafter as the disbelieving people who are in the graves.

Review of Surah al-Mumtahanah (The Test), which is a short surah consisting of 13 verses may help us to make all efforts to worship God alone reflecting to the example cited in Abraham and those who were with him for our successful return as idol worshiping is a human tragedy to make us losers in the Hereafter, and neither relatives nor children can benefit on a day of the Resurrection as God will judge between ourselves as a Seer of everything.
Peaceful Friday, salaam and God bless.
