Surah al-Jumu`ah (Surah 62: Revelation Order 110)

God is the Sovereign, the Holy, the Almighty, the Wise

  • Glorifies God whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth – the Sovereign, the Holy, the Almighty, the Wise (62:1).
  • Note: We should glorify God reflecting that He is the Sovereign Who is being glorified by whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth.

God bestows His bounty whomever He wills

  • He is the One Who has raised a messenger (Muhammad) in the gentiles from them to recite His revelations to them, and to purify them, and to teach them the scripture and the wisdom, even though they have been before surely in clear astray (62:2). And others from them (gentiles) do not join with them (believers), and He is the Almighty, the Wise (62:3). That is God’s bounty – He gives it to whomever He wills, and God is Possessor of the great bounty (62:4).
  • Note: Here is a clear indication that Prophet Muhammad was a gentile messenger prophet as God had chosen him from the gentiles to teach them the scripture but many of them did not join with the believers those who had listened to the scripture (Quran) and had believed it. However, the gentiles were those who have not been given the scripture or those who have no knowledge of the scripture or those who have not followed any scripture when the Quran has been revealed.

The Jews had failed to understand and uphold the Torah

  • An example of those who have been entrusted with the Torah, then they do not carry it, is like an example of the donkey carries great books. It has been miserable as an example of the people who have denied in God’s revelations, and God does not guide the people of the wrongdoers (62:5). Say, “O you who have become Jews, if you have claimed that you are allies of God besides the people, then you shall wish for the death if you have been truthful!” (62:6). And they will not ever wish for it for what their hands have sent forth, and God is Knower of the wrongdoers (62:7). Say, “Indeed, the death, which you flee from it, then indeed, it will be of your meeting. Then you will be returned to a Knower of the unseen and the witness, so He will inform you of what you had done to accomplish.” (62:8).
  • Note: The Torah was given to the Jewish prophets and the Jews were failed to uphold it except just claiming them that they are followers of it, and the example as cited is very unfortunate for the Jews but also an warning for the followers of the Quran. Thus, what we see now most people who claim that they know the Quran have not learned from it what they need to learn to do the righteous deeds except turning over the pages of the scripture or memorizing it.

Commandment of the Friday prayer for the believers

  • O you who have believed, when a call has been made for the salat prayer on a day of the Friday, you shall hasten to remembrance of God, and shall leave the business. That is better for you, if you have been of those who know (62:9). Then when the salat prayer has been completed, then you shall spread in the land, and shall seek from God’s bounty, and shall remember God much, that you may succeed (62:10). And when they have seen a business deal, or an entertainment, they have rushed to it and have left you (Muhammad) standing. Say, “What is at God is better than the entertainment and the business deal. And God is the best Provider.” (62:11).
  • Note: Here is a commandment for the Friday congregational prayer that God wants His believers not to miss it at any circumstances even being an opportunity to learn the scripture through 2-part sermon along with 2-unit salat prayer.

Surah al-Jumu’ah (The Friday) has addressed the Friday prayer for the prophet’s contemporary believers including the gentiles when the Quran is being revealed to observe it not being distracted from anything, which has reflected in the Arabic word, wa-tarakuuka having 2nd person singular object pronoun (ka) meaning “you” referring to prophet at the ending verse of the surah.
