Review of instances derived from aamana in Quran part III

Introduction

There are 812 instances, which are closely related in the verb (537), verbal noun (45) and active participle (230) forms as shown in the table below: 45 instances of īmān meaning “faith/belief” in the verbal noun form have been reviewed to understand the message in different context while 230 instances in the active participle form are being reviewed gradually that we may clear understanding from the Quran that we can be the true believers in God and His revelations.

Note: The above table is populated with data obtained from the corpus.quran.com. However, there is an instance of mu’min in 9:128, which is not included in the above table as the verse does not belong to the Quran as the last two verses, 128 and 129 of sura 9 in the Quan were added as suggested by one of the scribes to honor the prophet when the Quran was copied from the original during the reign of Khalif Uthman.

Instances of mu’min

Out of 229, 56 instances of mu’min meaning “believer(s)” found in 48 verses across 5 suras in the Quran have already been reviewed while another 55 instances found in 53 verses across 11 suras are described here:

[7:2] A scripture has been revealed to you that it may not be a discomfort in your chest from it, that you may warn with it, and a reminder for the believers (wa-dhik’raa lil’mu’mineena).

[7:72] So, we saved him (Hud) and those with him by mercy from us, and destroyed leaving no one of those who had denied in our revelations, and they have not been believers (wa-maa kaanuu mu’mineena).

[7:75] The leaders – those who had been arrogant among his people said to those who had been prevented for whoever believed among them, “Do you know that Saleh is sent one from his Lord?” They said, “Indeed, we are believers in that he has been sent with it.” (innaa bimaa ur’sila bihi mu’minnuun).”

[7:85] And to Madian, their brother Shuaib. He said: “My people, you shall worship God, there is no god for you other than Him. Certainly, a clear proof has come to you from your Lord, so you shall give full measure and weight, and you are not to deprive of the people in their things, nor are you to make corruption in the earth after its reformation. That is better for you if you have been believers (dhaalikum khayrun lakum in kuntum mu’mineena).”

[7:132] And they said: “Whatever you bring us with it of a sign that you bewitch us with it, then we will not be of believers for you (fa-maa nahnu laka bi-mu’mineena).”

[7:143] And when Moses had come to our appointment, and his Lord spoke to him; he said, “My Lord, show me – I can look at You.” He said, “You cannot see Me but look at the mountain that if it has stayed in its place, then you can see Me.” Then when his Lord had revealed to the mountain, He made it crumbing to dust, and Moses fell down unconscious. Then when he had recovered, he said, “Glory to You, I have repented to You and I am first of the believers (wa-anaa awwalu al-mu’mineena).”

[8:1] They ask you about the spoils of war, say: “The spoils of war belong to God and the messenger.” So, you shall fear God and shall be just of a matter between you, and shall obey God and His messenger if you have been believers (in kuntum mu’mineena).

[8:2] The believers are only those – when has been mentioned God, has feared their hearts (innamaa al-mu’minuuna alladheena idhaa dhukira allahu wajilat quluubuhum); and when has been recited His revelations to them, has increased them in faith; and upon their Lord they put trust.

[8:4] Those – they are the true believers (ulaaika huwa al-mu’minuuna haqqan); for them there are higher ranks with their Lord, and forgiveness and an honorable provision.

[8:5] As that your Lord had willed to bring you out from your home with the truth, while indeed, a party of the believers were surely dislikers (wa-inna mina al-mu’mineena la’kaarihuuna).

[8:19] If you ask for victory, then certainly, the victory has come to you, but if you cease, then it is better for you. And if you return, then we will return. And you cannot avail anything of your forces even if they have been numerous. And that God is with the believers (wa-anna allaha ma`a al-mu’mineena).

[8:62] And if they intend to deceive you (prophet), then God has for your sufficiency. He is the One who has strengthened you with His help and with the believers (huwa alladhee ayyadaka binasirihi wa-bil-mu’mineena).

[8:64] O you prophet, has sufficiency for you from God and whoever has followed you of the believers (wa-mani ittaba`aka mina al-mu’mineena).

[8:65] O you prophet, you shall urge the believers to the fighting (yaayyuhaa al-nabiyu harridi al-mu’mineena `alaa al-qitali). If there would be twenty steadfast among you, they will defeat two hundred, and if there would be a hundred among you, they will defeat a thousand of those who have disbelieved, is of that they are a people do not understand.

[8:74] And those who have believed and have emigrated and have strived in God’s way, and those who have given shelter and helped, those – they are the true believers (ulaaika humu al-mu’minuuna haqqan). For them there is forgiveness and an honorable provision.

[9:10] They do not respect in a believer kinship, nor a covenant of protection (laa-yarqubuuna fee mu’minin illan wa-laa dhimmatan). And those – they are the transgressors.

[9:13] Will you not fight a people who broke their oaths and intended of driving out the messenger, and they attacked you first? Do you fear them? While God is worthy that you should fear Him if you have been believers (in kuntum mu’mineena).

[9:14] You shall fight them; God will punish them by your hands and disgrace them and give you victory over them, and will heal people’s chests of believers (wa-yashfi suduura qawmin mu’mineena).

[9:16] Or have you thought that you would be left while God would not make known of those who have strived among you nor do they take other than God nor His messenger nor the believers as intimates (wa-lam yattakhidhuu min duuni allahi wa-laa rasuulihi wa-laa al-mu’mineena waleejatan)? And God is Cognizant of what you do.

[9:26] Then God sent down tranquility upon His messenger and upon the believers (thumma anzala allahu sakeenatahu `alaa wa-`alaa al-mu’mineena), and He sent down soldiers which you cannot not see, and He punished those who disbelieved. That is a recompense of the disbelievers.

[9:51] Say: “Never will befall us except what God has decreed for us, He is our Protector.” And on God is the believers should put trust (wa-`alaa allahi fal-yatawakkali al-mu’mineena).

[9:61] And among them, those who hurt the prophet, and they say: “He is all ear!” Say: “An all ear is good for you. He believes in God and believes for the believers (yu’minu billahi wa-yu’minu lil’mu’mineena), and is a mercy to those who believe among you.” And those who hurt God’s messenger, for them there is a painful punishment.

[9:62] They swear to you by God that they may please you; while God and His messenger are worthy that they should please Him if they have been believers (in kaanuu mu’mineena).

[9:71] And the believing men and the believing women (wal-mu’minuuna wal-mu’minaatu), some of them are allies to one another. They enjoin good and forbid from the evil, and they establish the contact prayer and give the obligatory charity, and they obey God and His messenger. Those, God will grant mercy on them; indeed, God is Almighty, Wise.

[9:72] God has promised the believing men and the believing women Gardens (wa`ada allahu al-mumineena wal-mu’minaati jannaatin), the rivers flow underneath from it, are abiding therein forever, and pleasing homes in Gardens of everlasting bliss, while God’s pleasure is greater. That, it is the great success.

[9:79] Those who criticize the believers who give much in the charities (alladheena yalmizuuna al-mutawi`ieena mina al-mu’mineena fee al-sadaqaati) and those who do not find except their effort. So, they ridicule of them while God will ridicule of them and for them there is a painful punishment.

[9:105] And say: “You shall do, then God will see your deed and His messenger and the believers (fa-sa’yaraa `amalakum wa-rasuulihu wal-mu’minuuna). And you will be brought back to knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do.”

[9:107] And those who have taken a masjid for harm and disbelief and division between the believers (wa-alladheena ittakhaduu masjidan diraaran wa-kuf’ran wa-tafreeqan bayna al-mu’mineena), and as a station for whoever fought God and His messenger of before. And surely, they swear, “They have not wished except the good,” while God bears witness that indeed, they are surely liars.

[9:111] Indeed, God has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth (inna allaha ish’tara mina al-mu’mineena anfusahum wa-amwaalahum), with that for them is Paradise. They fight in God’s path that they kill and are killed. A promise upon Him is true in the Torah and the Injeel and the Quran. And whoever has confidence to his pledge to God. So, you shall rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted with it. That it is the great success.

[9:112] The repenters, and the worshipers, and the praisers, and the wanderers, and the bowers, and the prostraters, and the advocates of the right, and the forbidders from the evil, and the guards of God’s limits. And you shall give good news to the believers (wa-bashiri al-mu’mineena).

[9:122] And it has not done the believers that they go forth all together (wa-maa kaana al-mu’munuuna li-yanfiruu kaaffatan). Then why not from every group has gone forth of them a party that they may obtain understanding about the religion, and that they may warn their people when they have returned to them that they may beware.

[10:57] O the people, certainly, advice has come to you from your Lord and a healing for what is in the chests, and a guidance and mercy for the believers (wa-shfaaon limaa fee al-suduuri wa-hudan wa-rahmantan lil’mu’mineena).

[10:78] They said: “Have you come to us that you turn us away from what we found upon it our fathers, and that you two may have greatness in the land? And we are not in believers of you two (wa-maa nahnu lakumaa bi-mu’mineena).”

[10:87] And we inspired to Moses and his brother that you shall settle for your people houses in Egypt and shall make your houses as places of worship, and shall observe the contact prayer. And you shall give good news to the believers (wa-bashiri al-mu’mineena).

[10:99] And if your Lord had willed, surely, every one of them together who is in the earth would have believed. Do you then compel the people until they become believers (a-fa-anta tuk’rihu al-naasa hattaa yakuunuu mu’mineena)?

[10:103] Then we save our messengers and those who have believed. Thus that it is an obligation upon us to save the believers (ka’dhaalika haqqan `alaynaa nunji al-mu’mineena).

[10:104] Say (Muhammad): “O the people, if you have been in doubt of my religion, then I do not worship those whom you worship other than God, but I worship God, the One who causes death to you, while I have been commanded that I would be with the believers (wa-umir’tu an akuuna mina al-mu’mineena).”

[11:53] They said: “O Hud, you have not brought us of any clear proof, and we are not leaving our gods from your saying, and we are not in believers for you (wa-maa nahnu laka bi-mu’mineena).”

[11:86] “God’s remain for you is best if you have been believers (in kuntum mu’mineena). And I (Shuaib) am not of a guardian over you.”

[11:120] And each, we relate to you of the messengers’ news that we may make firm your heart with it. And there has come to you in this the truth and a warning and a reminder for the believers (wa-jaa-aka fee haadhihi al-haqqu wa-maw`izatun wa-dhik’raa lil’mu’mineena).

[12:17] They said: “O our father, indeed, we went a race each other and we left Joseph with our possessions, and the wolf ate him! And you are not in believers of us even if we have been truthful (wa-maa anta bi-mu’minin lanaa wa-law kunnaa saadiqeena).”

[12:103] And most of the people are not, even though you intended with believers (wa-law harasta bimu’mineena).

[14:11] Their messengers said: “We are not except human like you, and except that God bestows His grace upon whomever He wills of His servants. And it has not been for us that we bring you with any authority except by God’s permission. And on God is the believers should put trust (wa-`alaa allahi fal-yatawakkali al-mu’mineena).”

[14:41] “Our Lord, forgive for me and for my parents, and for the believers on a day the reckoning will take place (wa-lil’mumimeena yawma yaquumu al-hisaabu).”

[15:77] Indeed, in that there is certainly a sign for the believers (inna fee dhaalika la’aayatan lil’mu’mineena).

[15:88] You should not be jealous to what we bestowed with it of groups from them and should not grieve over them, and you shall lower your wing for the believers (wa-ikh’fid janaahaka lil’mu’mineena).

[16:97] Whoever has done as righteous from male or female, and he is a believer (man `amila saalihan min dhakarin aw unthaa wa-huwa mu’minun), then surely, we will give him a good life, and surely, we will pay them their reward with best of what they have done to accomplish.

[17:9] Indeed this, the Quran guides to that which is straight and gives good news to the believers who do the righteous deeds (wa-yubashiru al-mu’mineena alladheena ya`maluuna al-saalihaati) that for them there is a great reward.

[17:19] And whoever has desired the Hereafter for him and has exerted his effort for it, and he is a believer (wa-sa`aa lahaa sa`yahaa wa-huwa mu’minun), then those have made their effort will be the appreciated ones.

[17:82] And we reveal in the Quran of what it is healing and mercy for the believers (wa-nunazzilu min al-qur’aani maa huwa shifaaon wa-rahmatun lil’mumineena), but it does not increase except loss to the wicked.

[18:2] Straight that it warns of a severe punishment from Him, and gives good news to the believers who do righteous works (wa-yubashira al-mu’mineena alladheena ya’maluuna al-saalihaati), that they will have a good reward.

[18:80] “And as for the boy that his parents had been believers (wa-ammaa al-ghulaamu fa-kaana abawaahu), so we feared that he would overburden them with (his) transgression and disbelief.”

  • A believer who has desired the Hereafter for him and has exerted his effort for it, is a gift from God.
  • God has revealed healing and mercy in Quran for the believers, but it increases loss to the wicked.
  • God has made the Quran straight to warn and to give good news to the believers to be righteous.
  • The boy was killed to be overburden on his believing parents for his transgression and disbelief.

In conclusion, God has given the Quran, the final edition of His scripture to the prophet to warn the people with it as well as to be a reminder, guidance, healing, mercy, straight path, and good news for a believer who has desired for the Hereafter and has exerted his effort for it is a gift from his Lord.
