Instances of “حَمدُ” (hamd)
[2:30] And when your Lord said to the angels, “I am placing a representative in the earth.” They said, “Will You place therein one who will spread corruption therein and shed blood, while we glorify You with Your praise (nusabbihu bihamdika), and we sanctify You?” He said, “Surely, I know what you do not know.”
[13:13] And glorifies the thunder with His praise (bihamdihi) and the angels for fear of Him, and He sends the lightning and strikes with it whomever He wills. Yet they dispute about God, while He is the most powerful.
[15:98] So glorify your Lord with praise (bihamd), and be with prostrators.
[17:44] He is glorified by the seven heavens and the earth, and whatever is in them, and there is not a single thing but it glorifies His praise (yusabbihu bihamdihi), but you do not comprehend their glorification. Indeed, He is Compassionate, Forgiving.
[17:52] The day He calls you when you will respond with His praise (bihamdihi), and you will not think except that you had stayed a little (while).
[20:130] Therefore, you shall be patient upon what they say, and shall glorify with praise (wa-sabbih bihamdi) of your Lord before rising of the sun (Fajr prayer) and before its setting (Asr prayer) and from hours of the night (Maghrib and Isha prayer), then you shall glorify (fa-sabbih) also at ends of the day (Zahur prayer), that you may please (your Lord).
Note: Here is a commandment for the prophet to establish 5 times salat prayer to please his Lord.
[25:58] And rely on the Eternal, the One who does not die, and glorify with His praise (wa-sabbih bihamdihi). And He is sufficient with the sins of His servants being aware of.
[32:15] Only those who believe in our revelations, when they are reminded with them, fall prostrate and glorify with praise (wa-sabbahoo bihamdi) of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.
[39:75] And you will see the angels surrounding the throne, glorifying with praise (yusabbihuuna bihamdi) of their Lord. And it will be judged between them with the truth, and it will be said: “Praise be to God (al-hamdu lillahi), Lord of the universe”
[40:7] Those who carry the throne and those who are around it glorify with praise (yusabbihuuna bihamdi) of their Lord, and believe in Him, and they ask forgiveness for those who have believed: “Our Lord, You encompass all things with mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who repented and followed Your path, and spare them the punishment of the Hellfire.”
[40:55] So, you shall be patient, God’s promise is true, and shall ask forgiveness for your sin, and shall glorify with praise (wa-sabbih bihamdi) of your Lord in the evening and the morning.
[42:5] The heavens nearly shatter from above them, and the angels glorify with praise (yusabbihuuna bihamdi) of their Lord, and they ask forgiveness for those in the earth. Surely, God is the Forgiver, the Merciful.
[50:39] So, you shall be patient to what they say, and shall glorify with praise (wa-sabbih bihamdi) of your Lord before rising of the sun and before the setting.
[52:48] And you shall be patient for your Lord command, as indeed, you are under our eyes; and shall glorify with praise(wa-sabbih bihamdi) of your Lord when you get up.
[110:3] Then you shall glorify with praise (fa-sabbih bihamdi) of your Lord, and shall ask His forgiveness. Indeed, He has been Forgiving.
The review of the verses associating with the instances of “hamd” conveys the following message referring to ‘glorify God with His praise’:
- The angels consistently glorify God with His praise, and sanctify Him.
- The thunder and the angels glorify with praise of their Lord for fear of Him.
- The seven heavens and the earth as well as whatever in them glorify God with praise, which may not be comprehensible to us.
- Be patient, and glorify with praise of your Lord before the sunrise and sunset as well as a part of a night and at both ends of the day to become thankful to Him.
- Ask forgiveness for your sin, and glorify with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morningas God’s promise is true, He is the Forgiver, the Merciful.
- Fall prostrate, and glorify with praise of your Lord when you are reminded with His revelations, and those who do not do it, are arrogant.
- Glorify with praise of your Lord when you get up as you are in the sights of your Lord.
- Glorify with praise of your Lord, and ask His forgiveness. He is the Redeemer.
- The day He calls us, we will respond Him with His praise.
- The angels will be around the throne and will glorify with praise of their Lord while the judgment will take place between them with the truth, and will come to an end proclaiming: “Praise be to God, Lord of the universe.”
Instances of “الحَمدُ” (al-hamd)
[1:2] All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), Lord of the worlds.
[6:1] All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), the One who created the heavens and the earth, and who made the darkness and the light. Then, those who disbelieved in their Lord have really deviated (from Him).
[6:45] Thus was the wiping out of the remaining people who were wicked, and all praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), Lord of the worlds.
[7:43] And we removed hatred from them what was in their chests; rivers will flow beneath them; and they said: “All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), the One who has guided us to this, and we would not have been guided unless God guided us. The messengers of our Lord had come with the truth.” And they were informed: “This is Paradise, you have inherited it for what you have done.”
[10:10] Their prayer in it is: “Glory to You, O God!”, and their greeting in it is: “Peace,” and their final prayer is: “All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), Lord of the worlds.”
[14:39] “All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), the One who has granted me in old age Ishmael and Isaac. Indeed, my Lord is the hearer of the prayer.”
[16:75] God sets an example of a slave owned, who has no power over anything, and one whom we provided him with a good provision from us, so he spends from it secretly and publicly. Are they equal? All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), but most of them do not know.
[17:111] And say: “All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), the One who has not taken a son, nor does He have a partner in the dominion, nor does He have any ally out of weakness.” And magnify Him as He should be magnificent.
[18:1] Al praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), the One who sent down the scripture to His servant, and He has not given any crookedness in it.
[23:28] So when you and those who are with you have embarked on the ship, then say: “All Praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), the One who has saved us from the wicked people.”
[27:15] And we have blessed David and Solomon with knowledge but they said, “All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), the One who has favored us more than many of His believing servants.”
[27:59] Say: “All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi) and peace be upon His servants whom He has chosen.” Is God better, or whom they associate?”
[27:93] Say: “All praise be to God (al-hamdu lillahi), He will show you His signs and you will know them. And your Lord is not unaware of what you do.”
[28:70] And He is God, there is no god but He. All praise to Him (lahu al-hamdu) in the first and in the last, and decision is with Him, and to Him you will be returned.
[29:63] And if you ask them, “Who sends down water from the sky and gives life what is in the earth after its death,” they will say, “God.” Say, “All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi).” But most of them do not understand.
[30:18] And all praise to Him (lahu al-hamdu) in the heavens and the earth as well as in the evening and the middle of the day.
[31:25] And if you ask them: “Who created the heavens and the earth?” They will say: “God.” Say: “All praise be to God (al-hamdu lillahi).” But most of them do not know.
[34:1] All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), the One to whom is what in the heavens and what is the earth; and praise be to Him (lahu alhamdu) in the Hereafter. He is the Most Wise, the Cognizant.
[35:1] All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi). Initiator of the heavens and the earth; Who makes the angels messengers having wings of two, or three, or four. He increases in the creation as He wills. Indeed, God is powerful over all things.
[35:34] And they will say: “All praise be to God (al-hamdu lillahi), the One who has removed sorrow from us. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving, Appreciative.”
[37:182] And all praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), Lord of the worlds.
[39:29] God cites an example of a man who has disputing partners, and a man who is just to deal with one man. Are they equal? All Praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), but most of them do not know.
[39:74] And they will say: “All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), the One who has fulfilled His promise to us, and has made us inherit the earth, (and) we may enjoy Paradise as we wish. What an excellent recompense for the workers!”
[39:75] And you will see the angels surrounding the throne, glorifying with praise (yusabbihuuna bihamdi) of their Lord. And it will be judged between them with the truth, and it will be said: “All praise be to God (al-hamdu lillahi), Lord of the worlds.”
[40:65] He is the Living; there is no god except He. So, you shall worship Him being sincere, devoted the religion to Him. All praise to God (al-hamdu lillahi), Lord of the worlds.
[45:36] Then, all praise to God (lillahi al-hamdu), Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth; Lord of the worlds.
[64:1] What is in the heavens and what is in the earth glorify God. To Him is the dominion and all praise to Him (wa-lahu alhamdu). And He is powerful over all things.
The review of the verses associating with the instances of “al-hamd” conveys the following message referring to ‘all praise to God’ or ‘all praise to Him’:

- God is the One who created the heavens and the earth as well as made the darkness and light.
- God is the One who has granted Abraham in old age Ishmael and Isaac. He is the hearer of the prayer.
- God is the One who has not taken a son, nor does He have a partner in the dominion, nor does He have any ally out of weakness.
- God is the One who sent down the scripture to His servant, and He has not given any crookedness in it.
- God is the One who has chosen His servants from among us. Is God better, or whom they associate?”
- God is the One to whom what is in the heavens and what is the earth; and praise be to Him in the Hereafter. He is the Most Wise, the Cognizant.
- He is the Living; there is no god except He, we should worship Him being sincere, devoted the religion to Him.
- God is the Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth; Lord of the universe.

- God is the One who has fulfilled His promise to us, and has made us inherit the earth so that we may enjoy Paradise as we wish, which is an excellent recompense for the workers!”
- The angels will be around the throne and will glorify with praise of their Lord while the judgment will take place between them with the truth, and when it comes to an end will be said: “Praise be to God, Lord of the universe.”
Mathematical confirmation
‘Praise be to God’ are found in 28 instances of the 27 verses across 21 suras in the Quran. If the relevant sura and verse numbers are added, the total is a multiple of 19 =>1748 = 19x92 (see the table below for details):
Note: In the table, the instances of “lahu al-hamdu” are highlighted with orange while 23 instances of al-hamdu lillahi, 1 instance of lillahi al-hamdu and 4 instances of lahual-hamdu participate in the mathematical confirmation while the verse 34:1 has the instances of both al-hamdu lillahi and lahual-hamdu.
This mathematical confirmation is a physical evidence from the Quran that God deserves all our praises, and we must direct our praises towards Him during our phrase and prayers being sincere, devoted religion to Him as there is no other god except He.The instances of hamd have not participated in the mathematical confirmation, is an indication that many of us who praise God are not praising Him as He should be praised. Although the instances of hamd have not participated but there is an instance of hamd in a share verse with al-hamd, which indicates a relation between ‘praise’ and ‘praise be to’ the One who deserves all our praises.
Conclusion
The review of the above verses indicates that the instances of “hamd” are not only grammatically different from the instances of “al-hamd” but they are also different in expression. The instances of “hamd” refer to glorifying God with His praise and asking for His forgiveness as He is the Forgiver and the Merciful while that of “al-hamd” refer to God who deserves all our praises being the Creator of the heavens and the earth as well as the Lord of the universe. He is the One who deserves all our praises in our earthly as well as in the heavenly life awaiting us while all of us do not praise Him and many of us who praise Him are not praising Him as He should be praised to be guided to Paradise.
Even there is a mathematical confirmation of ‘praise be to God’ (al-hamdu lillahi) to strengthen our hearts for our assurance that God deserves all our praises to make our all efforts to praise Him avoiding all kinds of idolatry from our praise and prayer. In addition, we may reflect to the fact that this mathematical confirmation also supports the mathematical design of the contact prayer (salat), a prime source of nourishing our soul. The participation of 1:2 and 37:182 (Praise be to God, Lord of the universe – alhamdu lillahi rabbil `aalameen), 39:75 (glorifying with praise of their Lord – yusabbihuuna bihamdi rabbihim) and 28:70 (He is God, there is no god but He – wa-huwa allahu laa-ilaha illa huwa) in the mathematical confirmation provides such evidence to have the correct recitation of some components in certain positions during the salat prayer. While this evidence can be connected to the recitation of al-Fatehah at standing position as our given specific words, the recitation when we return to standing position from bowing (samee`a allahu liman hamidah) and the recitation in our sitting position (ash-hadu an laa-ilaha illah allah wahdahu laa-shareeka lah) known as tashahud to dedicate our prayer to God being owner of all our praise and prayer.
