The earth is adorned with everything for the people to test them and to expose those among them who are better in their works (18:7) while it will be made to a barren land on a Day of the Judgment (18:8). Thus, this world will come to an end and the people will be gathered before their Lord for judgment to receive either their recompense or requital for their works followed by this event. God has provided us with many signs in the Quran to know how close the event is or when the world will come to an end, even we are blessed with the knowledge to predict the year from it that the world will come to an end in the year 1710 A.H (2280 A.D). The day when the world will come to an end is so significant that it has been mentioned referring to the Last Day, the Day of Resurrection, the Day of Gathering and the Day of Judgment based on the events associated with the day. Since the events that are associated with the day will come to pass, the day is also termed as the Promised Day while the day when the world will come to an end is the Last Day as per our concern. However, what God has promised in the Quran on the day will come to pass and no force can stop it that we need to concentrate so that we all can prepare ourselves for the day:
[18:7] Indeed, we have made what is on the earth (`alaa al-ardi) as an adornment for it (lahaa), that we can test them which of them is better in deed.
[18:8] And indeed, we will surely make what is on it (`alayhaa) to a barren land.
The Last Day
The Last Day is the day when the horn will be blown (50:20). The earth will be leveled and it will eject all its contents (84:3-4) while the mountains will be removed and crumbled (52:10 and 56:5).The heaven will crack and fall apart (69:16) while the sun and the moon will crash onto one another (75:9). This is the promised day that will surely occur (77:7) and no force in the universe can stop it (52:7-8).The day will be a terrible day, especially for the disbelievers (74:9-10). It will be so terrible that even a nursing mother will forget her child and a pregnant woman will miscarry (22:2), and the human being will try to find an escape but there is no escape from it (75:10-11):
[50:20] And the horn will be blown; that is the promised day.
[84:3] And when the earth will be leveled.
[84:4] And it will eject what is in it and will become empty.
[52:10] And the mountains will be removed.
[56:5] And the mountains will be crumbled.
[69:16] The heaven will crack and fall apart.
[75:9] And the sun and the moon will crash onto one another.
[77:7] Indeed, what you are promised will surely occur.
[52:7] Indeed, the punishment of your Lord will surely occur.
[52:8] There is nothing that can prevent it (from occurring).
[74:9] That will be a very difficult day.
[74:10] For the disbelievers, it will not be easy.
[22:2] A day you witness it, a nursing mother will forget her child and a pregnant woman will miscarry, and you will see the people are intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of God is severe.
[75:10] The human being will say on that day, “Where is the escape?”
[75:11] Alas! there is no refuge.
Resurrection and Gathering before God
God has given us life, then He will put us into death then He will gather us on the Resurrection Day in which there is doubt (42:26, 4:87, 23:16). The people will come out like swarms of butterflies (101:4) and will be gathered before God (3:9). They will come to Him individually (19:95) to receive their recompense for their works (16:111). He will set up the scales of justice (21:47), and the earth is within His fist while the heavens will be folded in His right hand (39:67):
[45:26] Say: “God gives you life, then He puts you to death, then He will gather you to the Resurrection Day, in which there is no doubt. But most people do not know.”
[4:87] God, there is no god but He. He will surely gather you to the Resurrection Day in which there is no doubt, and whose statement is more truthful than God?
[23:16] Then you will surely be resurrected on the Resurrection Day.
[101:4] A day when the people will come out like swarms of butterflies.
[3:9] Our Lord, You will surely gather the people on a day in which there is no doubt. God never breaks a promise.
[19:95] And all of them will come to Him on a day of the Resurrection as individual.
[16:111] A day every soul will come when it will plead for itself, and every soul will be paid in full for what it had done, and they will not be wronged.
[21:47] And we will set up the scales of the justice on a day of the Resurrection. So no soul will be wronged in anything. Even if there has been weight of a mustard seed, we will bring of it. And it has sufficed of us as reckoners.
[39:67] And they have not appraised of His true appraisal. The whole earth will be in His grip on a day of the Resurrection, and the heavens will be folding at His right hand. Glory is His, and He has exalted Himself too High what they associate (with Him).
Judgment
There are many hints in the Quran that the judgment will occur followed by the destruction of the world as well as resurrection and gathering before God. However, the Arabic word “دينَ” (Deen) directly deals with the judgment. There are 92 instances of “دينَ” (Deen) as the noun in the Quran, which are translated to judgment, religion, recompense, law or worship in different contexts by different English translators of the Quran. An inquiry indicates that out of its 92 instances, 17 instances relate to the event of Judgment and the Judgment day, which are found in 17 verses of the Quran. However, here are the full text in English of these verses including a verse, (82:19) having an instance of “يَومَئِذٍ” (Yawma-idhin) meaning “That day”, which has defined Day of the Judgment:
[1:4] Master of a day of the Judgment (yawmi al-deen).
Note: We appreciate God focusing on four of His attributes: the Lord of the universe, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful and Master of a day of the Judgment given in our specific words (sura al-Faatihah) that we recite 17 times in the prayer to guide us to the straight path realizing that all command on a day of the Judgment belongs to Him (82:19) while God is the proper noun.
[15:35] “And indeed, a curse will be upon you (the Satan) until a day of the Judgment (yawmi al-deen).”
Note: God has let us know that the punishment of the Satan was due when he had refused to prostrate Adam as he disobeyed His command being proud of himself but He granted him a respite until a day of the Resurrection.
[26:82] “And the One who I hope that He will forgive me for my faults on a day of the Judgment (yawmi al-deen).”
Note: Abraham expected God’s forgiveness on a day of the Judgment as he accepted Him to be Lord of the universe.
[37:20] And they said: “Woe to us! This is a day of the Judgment (yawmu al-deen).”
Note: Such would be the consequence of those on a day of the Judgment, who had done to disbelieve in the resurrection and thought that no judgment will be occurring.
[38:78] “And indeed, My curse will be upon you (the Satan) until a day of the Judgment (yawmi al-deen).”
Note: God has let us know that the punishment of the Satan was due when he had refused to prostrate Adam disobeying His command being proud of himself, but He granted him a respite until a day of the Judgment.
[51:6] And indeed, the Judgment (al-deen) will surely be occurring.
[51:12] They ask: “When is a day of the Judgment (yawmu al-deen)?”
Note: Here are the confirmation about the event and a day of the Judgment to eliminate any doubt about it.
[56:56] This is their entertainment (requital) on a day of the Judgment (yawma al-deen).
Note: Here is the reference of the food and drink to be used to entertain the disbelievers on a day of the Judgment, which would be painful to them while the description of the food and drink given to them is allegorical.
[70:26] And those who believe in a day of the Judgment (bi-yawmi al-deen).
Note: The worshipers of God are those who believe in a day of the Judgment as well as establish the salat prayer and pay off zakat from their money to the poor and the needy.
[74:46] “And we had done to deny in a day of the Judgment (bi-yawmi al-deen).”
Note: Those who are on the left will find out what brought them to the miserable consequence: they did not establish salat prayer, nor did they feed the poor and disbelieved in a day of the Judgment.
[82:9] Yes, you disbelieved in the Judgment (bi-al-deen).
[82:15] They will enter it (Hell) on a day of the Judgment (yawma al-deen).
Note: Those who disbelieved in the Judgment will enter Hell on a day of the Judgment. Thus, both the event and a day of the Judgment have been confirmed to be taken place to eliminate any doubt from our hearts.
[82:17] And do you know what a day of the Judgment (yawmu al-deen) is?
[82:18] Then, do you know what a day of the Judgment (yawmu al-deen) is?
Note: The Judgment Day has been spelled out in the following verse that we all will be individually accountable to God for our works and all command will belong to Him on that day:
[82:19] A day (yawma) when no soul will have any power for any other soul, and all command (wa-al-amru) on that day (yawma-idhin) belongs to God.
[83:11] Those who disbelieved in a day of the Judgment (bi-yawmi al-deen).
Note: Here is a reference that those who disbelieve in a day of the Judgment have also disbelieved in the revelations of God.
[95:7] Then what does make you to deny in the Judgment (bi-al-deen) after (reflecting to such reward)?
Note: How can you deny such reward while those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds will receive never ending reward in a day of the Judgment?
[107:1] Have you seen the one who denies in the Judgment (bi-al-deen)?
Note: Those who fail to fulfill what God has made obligatory for them deny in the event of the judgment.
Mathematical confirmation
God, the Most Wise has given us the opportunity to mathematically confirm the event as well as the day of Judgment. The event of judgment (al-deen) and the judgment day (yawmi al-deen) are specifically mentioned in the 17 instances including 4 instances of al-deen and 13 instances of yawmi al-deen found in the 17 verses across 13 suras of the Quran, and if the relevant sura number and the verse number are added, the total is a multiple of 19 => 1178 = 19 x 62 as shown in the table below:
Note: This mathematical confirmation is an explicit proof not to have any doubt about the judgment day that we reflect to it at least 17 times a day during our salat prayers, while the instances of al-deen (the judgment) are highlighted just to make them distinct from the instances of yawmi al-deen (the judgment day) in the table. Even if, the instance of Yawma-idhin in 82:19 is included in the calculation as it plays a crucial role in the context about the judgment day.
Conclusion
There are 17 instances including 4 instances of al-deen and 13 instances of yawmi al-deen in the 17 verses across 13 suras of the Quran that state the event and the Judgment day: (1) God is the Master of Day of the Judgment, (2) the punishment of the Satan was due when he violated God’s order and refused to prostrate Adam but He granted him a respite until Day of the Judgment, (3) Abraham expected God’s forgiveness on the Judgment Day as he accepted Him to be Lord of the universe, (4) a miserable consequence of those on Day of the Judgment, who used to disbelieve in the resurrection and thought that no judgment will be occurring, (5) a clear confirmation of the event and the Judgment Day, (6) the disbelievers will enter Hell on the Judgment Day, (7) a reference of food and drink to be used to entertain the disbelievers on the Judgment Day, (8) those who worship God believe in the Judgment Day, (9) awesomeness of the Judgment Day, (10) Those who disbelieve in the Judgment Day have also disbelieved in the revelations of God, (11) those who believe and lead a righteous life will receive their reward on the Judgment Day from the Most Wise, and (12) those who fail to fulfill what God has made obligatory for them disbelieve in the judgment.
However, we may also reflect to the facts that (1) we appreciate God focusing on 4 of His attributes: (a)the Lord of the universe, (b)the Most Gracious, (c)the Most Merciful and (d)Master of the Day of Judgment given in our specific words (sura al-Faatihah) that we recite 17 times in our daily 5 times prayer to guide us to the straight path keeping in mind that all command on the Day of Judgment belongs to Him as clearly defined in (82:19), (2) 13 words of sura al-Faatihah are recited upon completion of the word, al-deen in the verse 4 (1:4), (3) there is a clear indication that Salat, the prime source of nourishing our souls has a direct relationship, specially the sura al-Faatihah with a day of the Judgment and (4) is not it surprising that God has used the same word (al-deen) both for the judgment and the religion while the religion is our way to receive either the recompense or the requital on a day of the Judgment?
God has associated the Judgment Day with the heavenly as well as the earthy events, which indicates that the Judgment Day is not merely a coincidence but a part of His master plan. In addition, the Quran teaches us that there is no less or more as well as no gray area or incompleteness when God is concern. Now, if any of us disbelieves in the Judgment Day claiming that judgment is taking every moment or makes a drama assuming something that would happen beyond the Last Day may be the violation of God’s laws or be the exceeding of limit given by God. However, our reckoning is taking place in every moment, and we will enter the Hereafter with our final records while we will receive from God what we precisely deserve on the Judgment Day.
The Quran has given us all the details about the judgment and the judgment day in a small set of simple and straightforward verses, even with minimum Arabic knowledge someone can confirm every piece of information going through the relevant verses in the Arabic Quran to be sure about it. If we sincerely review them and reflect to the mathematical confirmation, there should not be any doubt about a day of the Judgment. Hence, all of us should prepare for the day if we believe in God being certain about the Hereafter expecting something good from Him as Abraham did as well as to avoid any miserable situation on that day.
Peaceful Friday, salaam and God bless.
