There are 35 instances of umm meaning mother/foundation/abode found in 31 verses of 22 surahs in the Quran are detailed below to better understand the messages in the relevant verses:
[3:7] He is the One who has sent down to you (prophet) the scripture (Quran), of it there are clarified verses, which are foundation of the scripture and others are allegories (hunna ummu al-kitaabi wa-ukharu mutashaabihaatun). So, as for those in their hearts there is perversity, then they follow what has made allegorical representation of it for seeking the discord and seeking of its interpretation, while its interpretation does not know except God, and those who are well-founded in the knowledge – they say, “We have believed in it. All is from our Lord.” And none will take heed except possessors of the understanding.
[4:11] God directs you about your children; for the male is like a share of the two females. But if there has been only women of more than two, for them are two-thirds of what he has left. And if there has been only one, then for her is the one-half. And for his parents for each of them is the one-sixth of what he has left, if there has been a child for him. But if there would not be any child for him and there has inherited him his parents, then for his mother is the one-third (fa-li’ummihi al-thulithu). But if there has been siblings for him, then for his mother is the one-sixth (fa-li’ummihi al-sudusu) after any will he makes with it or any debt. Your parents and your children – you may not know which of them is nearer to you in benefit. That is an obligation from God; indeed, God has been Knower, Wise.
[4:23] Forbidden (in marriage) for you are your mothers (hurrimat `alaykum ummahaatukum), and your daughters, and your sisters, and sisters of your fathers, and sisters of your mothers, and your brother’s daughters, and your sister’s daughters, and your mothers who have nursed you (wa-ummahaatukumu allatee ar’da`nakum) and your sisters from the nursing, and mothers of your wives (wa-ummahaatu nisaaikum) , and step daughters who are in your guardianship of your women whom you had relations with them, but if you had no relations with them, then there is no sin upon you, and wives of your sons, those who are from your loins, and that you join between two sisters except what has passed before. Indeed, God has been Forgiving, Merciful
[5:17] That certainly, those who have disbelieved said, “Indeed, God: He is the Messiah, son of Mary.” Say, “Then who possesses power of anything against God if He has intended to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary and his mother (in araada an yuh’lika al-maseeha ib’na mar’yama wa-ummahu), and whoever is in the earth all?” And to God belongs dominion of the heavens and the earth, and what is between both of them. He creates whatever He wills, and God has power over everything.
[5:75] The Messiah, son of Mary was not but a messenger (of God); certainly, there had passed the messengers before of him (Jesus, the Messiah, son of Mary), and his mother was a saint (wa-ummuhu siddeeqatin). They both had done to eat the food. You shall see how we have made clear the revelations for them, then you shall see how they are deviated.
[5:116] And when God said, “O Jesus, son of Mary, have you said to the people, `Take me and my mother as gods other than God (ittakhidhuuni wa-ummiya ilaahayni min duuni allahi)?’ ” He said, “Glory is Yours. It would not be for me that I could say what has not been with any right for me. If I had said it, then You would have certainly known it. You know what is in myself, and I do not know what is in Yourself. Indeed You, You are Knower of the unseen.”
[6:92] And this is a scripture we have sent down it is a blessed one confirming which was before of it, and that you (prophet) may warn a mother of the cities (wa-li’tundhira umma al-quraa) and whoever is around it, and those who believe in the Hereafter, believe in it, and they give attention to establishing on their salat prayer.
[7:150] And when Moses had returned to his people with an anger of grief, he said, “It has been evil what you have done after of me. Have you been impatient for a commandment of your Lord?” And he had thrown down the tablets and had seized his brother by head pulling him towards him. He (his brother, Aaron) said, “Son of my mother (qaala ib’na umma); indeed, the people have considered me weak and they have been almost to kill me. So, you do not think of me the enemies, nor do you make me with the people of the wrongdoers.”
[13:39] God eliminates whatever He wills and He sets (whatever He wills), and with Him is Mother of the scripture (wa-`indahu ummu al-kitaabi).
[16:78] And God has brought forth you from your mothers’ wombs (wa-allaha akh’rajakum min butuuni ummahaatukum), not knowing anything, and He has made for you the hearing, and the sight, and the understanding that you may appreciate.
[19:28] O sister of Aaron, your father has neither been a bad man, nor has your mother been unchaste (wa-maa kaanat ummuki baghiyyan).”
[20:38] When we had inspired to your (Moses’) mother what is inspired (idh awhaynaa ilaa ummika maa yuuhaa).
[20:40] When your sister walks, then she says, “Shall I show you whoever can nurse him?” Thus, we had returned you to your mother (fa-ra`janaaka ilaa ummika), that she may cool her eyes and may not grieve. And you had killed a person, then we had saved you from the distress; and we had tested you with a test that you had stayed for years among a people of Madyan. Then you had appeared on a decreed time, O Moses.
[20:94] He (Aaron) said, “O son of my mother; do not seize by my beard nor my head (yabna-umma laa-takhudh bi-lih’yatii wa-laa-bi-rasii). Indeed, I have feared that you would say, `You have caused division between the Children of Israel, and you do not respect my order.’”
[23:50] And we have made son of Mary and his mother a sign (wa-ja`alnaa ib’na maryama wa-ummahu aayatun), and we have sheltered them to a high land, a place of resting with tranquility and water springs.
[24:61] It has not been any blame on the blind, nor has it been any blame on the crippled, nor has it been any blame on yourselves that you eat of your homes, or homes of your fathers, or homes of your mothers (buyuuti ummahaatukum), or homes of your brothers, or homes of your sisters, or homes of your paternal uncles, or homes of your paternal aunts, or homes of your maternal uncles, or homes of your maternal aunts, or what you have possessed its keys, or your friends. It has not been any blame that you eat together or individuals. So when you enter any homes, then you shall greet of yourselves a greeting from God, a good blessing. Thus that God makes clear the revelations for you, that you may understand.
[28:7] And we had inspired to Moses’ mother (wa-awhaynaa ummi muusaa) that you shall suckle him, then when you have feared for him that you shall throw him into the river, and do not fear, nor do you grieve. Indeed, we will be restorer of him to you, and will be maker of him one of the sent ones.
[28:10] And heart of Moses’ mother had become empty (wa-asbaha fuaadu ummi muusaa farighan) that she has been near to disclose of him, if not that we had strengthened of her heart that she would be one of the believers.
[28:13] Thus, we had restored him to his mother (fa-radadnaahu ilaa ummihi) that she may comfort her eye and may not grieve and that she would know that God’s promise is truth, but most of them do not know
[28:59] And your Lord has not been a destroyer of the towns until He raises a messenger in their mother towns to recite our revelations to them (yab’`atha ummihaa rasuulan yatluu `alayhim aayaatinaa). And we have not been a destroyer of the towns except, while their people are wrongdoers.
[31:14] And we have enjoined the human being about his parents. His mother has borne him as of weakness and his weaning is about 2 years (hamalat’hu ummuhu wahnan `alaa wahnin wa-fisaaluhu fee `aamayni) that you shall be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the destination.
[33:4] God has not made for any man of two hearts within his body, nor has He made your wives whom you estrange them as your mothers (allaatee tuzaahiruuna min’hunna ummahaatikum), nor has He made your adopted sons as your sons. That is your saying by your mouths, but God speaks the truth, and He guides to the (right) path.
[33:6] The prophet is closer to the believers than of themselves, and his wives are like their mothers (wa-azwaajuhu ummahaatuhum). Possessors of the relationships of them are closer to other in accordance with a decree of God than the believers and the emigrants, except that you do a kindness to your friends. It has been that is in the scripture as a written (record).
[39:6] He has created you from one soul, then He has made its mate from it. And He has sent down for you eight kinds of livestock. He creates you in your mothers’ wombs (yakhluqukum fee butuuni ummahaatikum), creation after creation through trimesters of darkness. That is God your Lord; to Him belongs the dominion. There is no god except He. Then how are you deviated?
[42:7] And thus that we have revealed to you (prophet) an Arabic Quran that you may warn mother of the cities (Makkah) (li’tundhira umma al-quraa) and whoever is around of it, and you may warn of a day of the Gathering, there is no doubt in it. A party will be in the Paradise, and a party will be in the blazing Fire.
[43:4] And indeed, it (Arabic Quran) is in Mother of the Scripture with us, is surely high, wise (wa-innahu fee ummi al-kitaabi ladaynaa la’aliyyun hakeemin).
[46:15] And we have enjoined the human being goodness with his parents. His mother has carried him with hardship (hamalat’hu ummuhu kur’han), and has given birth to him with hardship, and bearing of him as well as weaning of him until thirty-month. When he has reached his maturity and has reached forty-year he said, “My Lord, grant me that I can appreciate Your favor that You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and that I can do as righteous You like it and make righteous in my children for me. Indeed, I have turned to You; indeed, I am among the submitters.”
[53:32] Those who avoid the greater sins and the immoralities, except for the lesser offences. Indeed, the forgiveness of your Lord is immense. He is Knower of you when He has produced you from the earth and when you have been fetuses in wombs of your mothers (wa-idh antum ajinnatun fee butuuni ummahaatikum). So, you do not ascribe purity to yourselves; He is best Knower of whoever has feared (Him).
[58:2] Those who estrange among you of their wives, they are not their mothers (maa hunna ummahaatihim); their mothers are not except (maa ummahaatihim illaa) those who have given birth to them. And indeed, they say surely an evil of the word and a lie, while God is surely Pardoner, Forgiving.
[80:35] And his mother and his father (wa-ummihi wa-abeehi).
[101:9] That his abode is lowest (fa-ummuhu haawiyatun).

[75:5] Nay, the human being intends to give a lie in front of him (bal yureedu al-insaanu liyafjura amaamahu). .

Instances of umma can be reviewed reflecting meaning foundation in the context of the Quran having the clarified verses, which are foundation of the scripture, and meaning mother in the contexts of mother’s share in the inheritance law, mother, mother-in-law and a woman who has nursed are forbidden in marriage, mother of the cities and mother of the scripture, Mary being mother of Jesus as well as Jesus and his mother being a sign, mother of Moses to whom he was returned, mother of Aaron to be blamed for causing division between the Children of Israel in absence of Moses, raising a messenger in mother cities to recite God’s revelations, mother as care taker of her child, estranging wives as mothers, prophet’s wives are like mothers of the believers, fetuses in the wombs of mothers, and meaning abode to be in lowest, and the instance of amaan meaning in front about thinking of the gathering of the human being in front is a lie.
