Review instances of kataba and derived form in Quran-IV

There are 211 instances of kitaabun in the Quran meaning scripture referring to divine communication is written down, even though God has not sent down any  scripture in written form except for the Ten commandments given to Moses through tablets at Mount Sinai (7:145). But He knows that His revelation sent down from time to time to guide the mankind will be written down what He has been aware of it, and we may expect that His communication with His chosen ones may be fully understandable to us upon completion of review of all the instances of kitaabun in the Quran, while we know that the scripture is a basis to judge disputes between the people who hold fast to it.

Note: The above table is populated with data obtained from the corpus.quran.com.

53 instances of kitaabun found in 46 verses of 7 surahs are detailed below to better understand the messages in these verses of the Quran followed by review of 58 instances in 46 verses of 2 surahs:

[4:44] Do you not notice towards those who have been given a portion of the scripture (alladheena uutuu naseeban al-kitaabi)? They purchase the straying and wish that you (people) go to astray from the path (of God).

[4:47] O you who have been given the scripture (yaa’ayyuhaa alladheena uutuu al-kitaaba), you shall believe in what we have sent down confirming that which is with yourselves from before, that we efface faces, then we turn them on backs of them, or we curse them like that as we had cursed companions of the Sabbath. And it has been God’s command to be executed.

[4:51] Do you not notice towards those who have been given a portion of the scripture (alladheena uutuu naseeban al-kitaabi)? They believe in the superstition and the false deities, and they say to those who  have disbelieved, “These have better guidance than those who have believed in a path (other than them).”

[4:54] Or do they envy the people for what God has given them from His bounty? Then certainly, we have given a family of Abraham the scripture and the wisdom (fa-qad aataynaa aala ib’raaheema al-kitaaba wa-al-hik’mata), and we have given them a great kingdom.

[4:105] Indeed, we have sent down to you (prophet) the scripture with the truth (innaa anzalnaa ilayka al-kitaaba bil-haqqi) that you may judge between the people with what God shows you, and do not be a pleader for the deceitful ones.

[4:113] If it were not for God’s grace upon you and His mercy, a group of them had surely resolved to mislead you, while they do not mislead except of them, and they cannot harm you in anything. And God has sent down to you (prophet) the scripture and the wisdom (wa-anzala allahu `alayka al-kitaaba wa-al-hikmata), and He has taught you (prophet) what you do not know. And it has been a great grace of God upon you (prophet).

[4:123] It has not been of your desires, nor desires of a people of the scripture (wa-laa-amaaniyyi ahli al-kitaabi). Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it, and he will not find for him other than God any protector nor a helper.

[4:127] And they may seek to you (prophet) advice about the women. Say, “God gives you (people) advice about them, and what is recited to you (people) in the scripture (wa-maa ut’laa `alaykum fee al-kitaabi) about the orphan girls to whom you do not give them what has been decreed for them, while you desire to marry them, and those who are week of the children, and that you should stand for the orphans with the justice. And whatever of good you (people) do, then indeed, God has been Knower of it.”

[4:131] And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and that certainly we have enjoined those who have been given the scripture from before of yourselves and of yourselves (alladheena uutuu al-kitaaba min qablikum wa-iyyakum) that you shall fear God, and if you disbelieve, then indeed, to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. And God has been Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

[4:136] O you who have believed, you shall believe in God, and His messenger, and the scripture which He has sent down to His messenger (wa-al-kitaabi alladhee nazzala `alaa rasuulihi), and the scripture which He has sent down from before (wa-al-kitaabi alladhee anzala min qabli). And whoever disbelieves in God, and His angels, and His scriptures (wa-kutubihi), and His messengers, and the Last Day, then certainly he has gone astray a  faraway straying.

[4:140] And certainly He has sent down to you (people) in the scripture (wa-qad nazzala `alaykum feel al-kitaabi) that when you have heard God’s revelations to disbelieve in them and is ridiculed, then do not sit with them until they engage in a conversation other than of it. Indeed, then you would be like of them. Indeed, God will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers all together in Hell.

[4:153] The people of the scripture (Jews) ask you (prophet) (yas’aluka ahlu al-kitaaba) to bring down to them a scripture from the heaven (an tunazzila `alayhim kitaaban mina al-samaai). That certainly, they had asked Moses greater than that as they said, “Show us God in manifestation.” So, the lightning had struck them because of their wrongdoing. Then they had taken the calf after which the clear proofs had come to them. Then we had pardoned from that. And we had given Moses a clear authority.

[4:159] And there was not from a people of the scripture (Jews) (wa-in min ahli al-kitaabi) except that he believes in him (Jesus) before his death. And on a day of the Resurrection, he (Jesus) will be a witness against them.

Note: Here is a confirmation about the death of Jesus, even we hear a myth about his return.

[4:171] O people of the scripture (yaa’ahla al-kitaabi), do not exceed limit in your religion, nor do you say about God except the truth. Indeed, the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary was a messenger of God and His word He had sent to Mary, and a spirit from Him. So, you shall believe in God and His messengers. You do not say, “Trinity.” You shall refrain, which is better for you. God is only One god. Glory is His that there would be a son for Him! To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. And it has sufficed with God as a Disposer of affairs.

[5:5] Today, it has been made lawful for you the good things; and food of those who have been given the scripture (alladheena uutuu al-kitaaba) is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them, and the chaste women from the believers as well as the chaste women from those who have been given the scripture before of you (alladheena uutuu al-kitaaba min qablikum), when you have given them their bridal dowries, being chaste, not being lewd, nor being the ones taking secret lovers. And whoever denies in the faith, then certainly, he has wasted his deeds and he will be with the losers in the Hereafter.

[5:15] O people of the scripture (Torah and Injeel) (yaa’ahla al-kitaaba); certainly there has come to you our messenger to make clear for you much of what you have done to conceal from the scripture (mina kitaabi) and to overlook of many. Certainly, there has come to you from God a light and a clarified scripture (wa-kitaabun mubeenin).

[5:19] O people of the scripture (Torah and Injeel) (yaa’ahla al-kitaaba); certainly, there has come to you our messenger to make clear to you upon an interval of the messengers lest you say, “There has not come to us a bearer of good news, nor a warner.” That certainly, there has come to you a bearer of good news and a warner. And God has power over everything.

[5:44] Indeed, we have sent down the Torah; there was guidance and light in it to judge by it the prophets those who had submitted (to God), to those who had been Jews, and the rabbis and the scholars with which they had been entrusted with God’s scripture (bimaa us’tuh’fizuu min kitaabi allahi), and they had been witnesses upon it. That you do not fear the people, while you shall fear Me, nor do you sell of My revelations for a small price. And whoever does not judge with which God has sent down, then those – they are the disbelievers.

[5:48] And we have sent down to you (prophet) the scripture (Quran) with the truth (wa-anzalnaa ilayka al-kitaaba bil-haqqi), confirming that which was before of it of the scripture, and consolidating on it (Quran) (musaddiqan limaa bayna yadayhi mina al-kitaabi wa-muhayminan `alayhi). That you shall judge between of them with which God has sent down, and do not follow their wishes when there has come to you of the truth. For each we have made law and rite; and if God had willed that He would have made you (people) one community; but to test you in which He has given you. So, you shall race for the good. To God is your return for all, then He will inform you of what you have done to differ.

Note: God has left no room for the believers to follow other than the Quran by sending down it confirming the scripture before it as well as consolidating on it.

[5:57] O you who have believed, you do not take allies those who have taken your religion in ridicule and fun from those who have been given the scripture from before of you and the disbelievers (mina alladheena uutuu al-kitaaba min qablikum wa-al-kufaara). You shall fear God, if you have been believers.

[5:59] Say, “O people of the scripture (yaa’ahla al-kitaaba), do you resent us except that we have believed in God and which has been sent down to us and which has been sent down from before (of us), and that most of you are disobedient?”

[5:65] And if that a people of the scripture had believed and had feared (God) (wa-law anna al-kitaaba aamanuu wa-ittaqaw), that we would have removed from them their evil deeds, and that we would have admitted them into gardens of the Bliss.

[5:68] Say, “O people of the scripture (yaa’ahla al-kitaaba), you have not been upon anything unless you uphold the Torah and the Gospel, and what has been sent down to you from your Lord.” And that it increases rebellion and disbelief to many of them, what has been sent down to you (Muhammad) from your Lord. So, do not grieve over the disbelieving people

[5:77] Say, “O people of the scripture (yaa’ahla al-kitaaba), you do not exceed limit in your religion beyond the truth, nor do you follow desires of a people certainly, they have gone astray, and have misled many, and have gone astray from an evenness of the path.”

[5:110] When God said, “O Jesus, son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother when I had supported you with the Holy Spirit to speak to the people in the crib and in maturity; and when I had taught you the scripture and the wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel (wa-idh `allam’tuka al-kitaaba wa-al-hikmata wa-al-tawraata wa-al-injeela); and when you make from the clay like a shape of the bird by My permission, then you breathe into it, so it becomes a (live) bird by My permission, and you heal the blind and the leper by My permission; and when you bring forth the dead by My permission; and when I had restrained the Children of Israel from you when you had come to them with the clear proofs, then those who had disbelieved from them said, ‘This is not but a clear magic.’

[6:20] Those whom we have given them the scripture recognize it (Quran) (alladheena aataynaahumu al-kitaaba ya`rifuunahu) like that they recognize their children. Those who have lost their souls that they do not believe.

[6:38] And neither of a creature in the earth nor a bird flies with its wings, but are communities like you. We have not left out of anything in the scripture (maa farratnaa fee al-kitaabi min shayin); then to their Lord they will be gathered.

[6:89] Those were whom we had given the scripture and the wisdom and the prophethood (ulaaika alladheena aataynaahumu al-kitaaba wa-al-hikmata wa-al-nubuwata). Then if anyone of these would disbelieve in it, that certainly, we had entrusted with it to a people who had not been disbelievers in it.

Note: Here is a confirmation of the prophethood to be associated with the scripture and the wisdom.

[6:91] They have not appraised God truth of His appraisal when they said, “God has not sent down anything to a human being.” Say, “Who has sent down the scripture which Moses had come with it (man anzala al-kitaaba alladhee jaa-a bihi muusaa) a light and guidance for the people? You make it parchments to proclaim it, and to conceal a lot. You have been taught what you did not know, you nor your forefathers.” Say, “God.” Then leave them in their discourse to play.

[6:92] And this is a scripture (Quran) we have sent down it is a blessed one (wa-haadhaa kitaabun anzalnaahu mubaarakun) confirming which was before of it, and that you (prophet) may warn a mother of the cities and whoever is around it. And those who believe in the Hereafter, believe in it, and they give attention to establishing on their salat prayer.

[6:114] Is there then other than God should I (prophet) seek as judge, while He is the One who has sent down to you (people) the scripture is a detailed one (wa-huwa alladhee anzala ilayhumu al-kitaaba mufassalan)? And those whom we have given them the scripture know (wa-alladheena aataynaahumu ya`lamuuna) that it is a sentdown from your Lord with the truth. So, do not be with the doubtful ones.

[6:154] Then we had given Moses the scripture completing (with our favor) (thumma aataynaa muusaa al-kitaabi tamaaman) for the one who had done good, and an explanation for all things, and a guidance and mercy that they may believe in meeting of their Lord.

[6:155] And this is a scripture (Quran) we have sent down it is a blessed one (wa-haadhaa kitaabun anzalnaahu mubaarakun). So you shall follow it and shall fear (God) that you are given mercy.

[6:156] That you would say: “The scripture has only been sent down to two groups from before of us (innamaa unzila al-kitaabu `alaa taaifatayni min qablinaa), and indeed, we have been surely unaware of their study.”

[6:157] Or you would say: “If that the scripture had been sent down to us (law annaa unzila `alaynaa al-kitaabu), surely, we would have been better in guidance than them.” So, certainly, there has come to you a clear proof from your Lord, and a guidance and a mercy. Then who is more wicked than whoever has denied in God’s revelations and has turned away from them? We will recompense those who turn away from our revelations an evil punishment for what they have done to turn away.

[7:2] A scripture has been sent down to you (prophet) (kitaabun unzila ilayka) that there would be no discomfort in your heart from it, that you may warn with it, and there is a reminder (in it) for the believers.

[7:37] That who is more wicked than whoever has invented a lie about God, or has denied in His revelations? To those will reach them their portion in accordance with the scripture (ulaaika yanaaluhum naseebuhum mina al-kitaabi), until when there has come our messengers (angels of death) to put them in death they said, “Where is whom you had done to call other than God?” They said, “They have gone away from us.” and they have borne witness against themselves that they had been disbelievers.

[7:52] And that certainly, we had come to them with a scripture we had explained it (ji’naahum bi-kitaabin fassalnaahu) with knowledge of guidance and mercy for a people to believe.

[7:169] That there has succeeded after of them successors who have inherited the scripture taking goods of this, the lower life and saying (khalfun warithuu al-kitaaba yakhudhuuna `arada haadhaa al-adnaa wa-yaquluuna), “It will be forgiven for us.” And if there comes to them goods like of it, they will accept it. Is it not a covenant of the scripture that they will not say about God except the truth and have studied what is in it? And the abode of the Hereafter is far better for those who fear (God). Do you not then reflect?

[7:170] And those who hold fast to the scripture (wa-alladheena yumassikuuna bil-kitaabi) and have established the salat prayer; indeed, we do not fail to give a reward of the reformers.

[7:196] Indeed, my (prophet) Protector is God, the One who has sent down the scripture (inna waliyyayia allahu alladhee al-kitaaba), and He protects the righteous.

[8:75] And those who have believed afterwards, and have emigrated, and have striven with you, then those are among you, while those of blood relations are nearer to each other in God’s scripture (wa-uluu al-arhaami ba`dahum awlaa bi-ba`din fee kitaabi). Indeed, God is Knower of everything.

[9:29] You shall fight those who do not believe in God, nor in the Last Day, nor do they forbid what God has forbidden and His messenger, nor do they acknowledge a religion of the truth from those who have been given the scripture (min alladheena uutuu al-kitaaba), until they pay the tax from willingness, while they are subdued ones.

[10:1] Alif.Laam.Ra. That is of signs (Quranic initials) of the scripture, the wise (tilka aayaatu al-kitaabi al-hakeemi).

[10:37] And it has not been this – the Quran that it could be produced by other than God, but is a confirmation of that which was before of it, and a detailed explanation of the scripture (wa-laakin tasdeeqa alladhee bayna yadayhi wa-taf’seela al-kitaabi) . There is no doubt in it, is from Lord of the worlds.

[10:94] That if you (Muhammad) have been in doubt of what we have sent down to you, then you shall ask those who read the scripture from before of you (fa-sali alladheena yaqrauuna al-kitaaba min qablika). That certainly, there has come to you (Muhammad) the truth from your Lord; so, do not be with the doubters.

Those who have been given the scripture purchase the straying and wish that the believers of the scripture, the Quran to go astray from a path of their Lord, while God has reminded them to believe in it to avoid punishment, and they have believed in the superstition and the false deities and have said the disbelievers to have better guidance. God has blessed a family of Abraham with the scripture and the wisdom, and He has sent down the scripture to Muhammad with the truth to judge between the people, and if it has not been God’s grace upon him, a group of them will mislead him. It is not desire of people, nor the people of the scripture to be recompensed as they will not find for them any protector nor a helper other than God, while He has given advice in the scripture to stand for the justice.

God has let us know what we should believe and those who disbelieve in that has gone faraway straying, and He will gather the disbelievers and the hypocrites in Hell confirming that a trinity is a false doctrine, and Jesus, son of Mary has been a messenger of God, while the death of Jesus has been confirmed to eliminate any doubt about it. He has made lawful all good things making marriage lawful between the people of Quran and the people of the previous scripture including their food to each other, while a messenger has come after an interval to make clear what has been concealed in the scripture and what has been overlooked in it, and He has sent down the Quran confirming the previous scripture and consolidating in it. If the people of scripture would believe in the Quran and would fear God upon upholding the Torah and the Gospel sent down from their Lord would be better for them.

Prophethood has been associated with the scripture and the wisdom. Moses had been given a blessed scripture, while the Quran is also a blessed one, which is a sentdown from God being it a detailed one and the people of the scripture know that it is a sentdown from their Lord with the truth. God will inform us on a day of the Judgment that He had come to people with a scripture having knowledge of guidance and mercy for the people to believe it. Thus, those who hold fast to the scripture and establish the salat prayer, He will not fail to reward them on a day of the Judgment, while the confirming scripture has come to us with the clear proof being God is author of it that we do not have any doubt about it, and He asked the prophet who had been given the scripture, Quran to those who read the scripture to confirm it from God not to have any doubt in his heart about it that he may warn people with it.
Peaceful Friday, salaam and God bless.
Tafazzal (05/30/2025).
