Review instances of jazaa and its derived in the Quran-II

There are 117 instances of jazaa and its derived forms in the Quran as shown in the table below are reviewed to better understand their meaning in different contexts:

Instances of jazaa

Out of 72 instances of jazaa in the verb I form, 58 instances found in 57 verses of 28 surahs are reviewed to better understand their meaning in different contexts. Here are details of 14 instances found in 13 verses of 9 surahs:

[45:14] Say (Muhammad) to those who have believed to forgive for those who do not expect God’s days that He would recompense a people for what they had done to earn (li’yaj’ziya qawman bi-maa kaanuu yak’sibuuna).

[45:22] And God has created the heavens and the earth with the truth, and that every soul would be recompensed for whatever it has earned (wa-li’tuj’zaa kullu nafsin bi-maa kasabat), and they will not be wronged.

[45:28] And you will see every community is in kneeling (from fear of God). Every community will be called to its record, “Today, you will be recompensed for whatever you had done to accomplish (al-yawma tuj’zawna maa kuntum ta`maluuna).”

[46:20] And a day will expose those who disbelieved to the Fire: “You have exhausted your good things in your life of the world and have rejoiced with them. So, today you will be recompensed a punishment of the humiliation (fa-al-yawma tuj’zawna `adhaaba al-huuni) for that you had been arrogant in the earth having no justification and for that you had been to be disobedient.”

[46:25] It (the storm) destroyed everything (of the people of dunes) by command of its Lord. Then they had been (in a situation), was not seen except their homes. Thus that we recompense the people of the wrongdoers (ka-dhaalika naj’zee al-qawma al-muj’rimeena).

[52:16] Burn in it (Hell), then be patient or do not be patient, it would be same for you. You are only recompensed for whatever you had done to accomplish (innamaa tuj’zawna maa kuntum ta`maluuna).

[53:31] And to God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth that He will recompense those who have done evil with what they have done (li’yaj’ziya alladheena asaauu bimaa `amiluu), and He will recompense those who have done good of the best (wa-yaj’ziya alladheena ah’sanuu bil-husnaa).

[53:41] Then he will be recompensed for it the recompense to the truthful (thumma yuj’zaahu al-jazaa-a al-awfaa).

[54:35] It was a favor from us. Thus that we recompense whoever has appreciated (ka-dhaalika naj’zee man shakara).

[66:7] O you who have disbelieved, you cannot make excuse today. You will only be recompensed for whatever you had done to accomplish (innamaa tuj’zawna maa kuntum ta`maluuna)

[76:12] And He will recompense them for that they had been patient is Paradise and silk (wa-jazaahum bimaa sabaruu jannatan wa-hareeran).

[77:44] Indeed we, thus that we recompense the good-doers (innaa ka-dhaalika naj’zee al-muh’sineena).

[92:19] And not for anyone with him any favor to be recompensed (wa-maa li-ahadin `indahu min ni`matin tuj’zaa).

Instance of nujaazee

There is one instance of nujaazee in the verb form III meaning ‘we recompense’ in the following verse of the Quran, is detailed below:

[34:17] That we recompensed them for that they had disbelieved. And do we not recompense except the ungrateful (wa-hal nujaazee illaa al-kafuura)?

Instances of jazaa

There are 42 instances of jazaa in the noun form meaning ‘recompense’ found in 39 verses of 25 surahs are detailed below to better understand their meaning in different contexts:

[2:85] Then you are those- you kill yourselves and evict a party of you from their homes, supporting one another against them in the sin and the transgression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, while it has been forbidden for you their eviction. Then do you believe in part of the scripture and disbelieve in part? Then what is a recompense for whoever does that among you (fa-maa jazaau man yaf’alu dhaalika minkum), except a disgrace in the life of the world, and on a day of the Resurrection they will be returned to the most severe punishment? And God is not unaware of what you do.

[2:191] And you shall kill them wherever you have found them and shall drive them out from wherever they had driven you out, while the oppression is worse than the killing. Do not fight them near the Sacred Masjid, unless they fight you in it. So, if they have fought you, then you shall kill them. Thus that is a recompense of the disbelievers (ka-dhaalika jazaau al-kaafireena).

[3:87] Those (who witnessed the messenger of covenant) – their recompense is that a curse of God on them, and the angels, and all of the people (jazaauhum anna `alayhim la`nata allahi wal-malaaikata wal-naasi aj’ma`eena).

[3:136] Those – their recompense is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens (jazaauhum maghfiratan min rabbihim wa-jannaatun) from underneath of them the rivers will flow, as dwellers therein forever, and there has been excellent reward for the workers.

[4:93] And whoever kills a believer with an intention, then his recompense is Hell, as a dweller therein forever (fa-jazaauhu jahannama khaalidan feehaa), and a wrath of God has fallen upon him and He has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.

[5:29] Indeed me, I (Abel) wish that you (Cain) will incur in my sin and your sin, then you will be among companions of the Fire, and that is a recompense for the wrongdoers (wa-dhaalika jazaau al-zaalimeena).”

[5:33] Only recompense for those who wage war (innamaa jazaau alladheena yuhaaribuuna) against God and His messenger and strive in spreading corruption in the earth is that they may be killed, or may be crucified, or may be cut off their hands and their feet of alternate sides, or may be banished from the land. That is for them a disgrace in the world, and for them there is a great punishment in the Hereafter.

[5:38] And the male thief and the female thief that you shall cut their hands as a recompense (wal-saariqu wal-saariqatu fa-iq’ta`uu ay’diyahumaa jazaa-an) for what they have earned to be exemplary from God, and God is Mighty, Wise.

[5:85] So, God has rewarded them for what they said, gardens from underneath of them the rivers will flow, as dwellers therein forever. And that is a recompense for the good-doers (wa-dhaalika jazaau al-muh’sineena).

[5:95] O you who have believed, you do not kill the game (animal) while you are in Ihram. And whoever has killed it with an intention from you, then a recompense like whatever he has killed from the livestock (fa-jazaaun mith’lu maa qatala mina al-na`ami) judging with it by two just men from you that offering is reaching the Ka`bah, or an expiation by feeding needy people, or an equivalent fasting that he can perceive a consequence of his deed. God has pardoned of what has past while whoever has returned, then God will take retribution of him. And God is Almighty, Possessor of retribution.

[9:26] Then God has sent down His tranquility upon His messenger and upon the believers. And He has sent down forces you do not see them, while He has punished those who have disbelieved, and that is a recompense of the disbelievers (wa-dhaalika jazaau al-kaafireena).

[9:82] So, let them laugh a little, and let them cry much, a recompense for what they had done to earn (jazaa-an bimaa kaanuu yak’sibuuna).

[9:95] They will swear by God to you, when you had returned to them (from war) that you may turn away from them. So you shall turn away from them; indeed, they are polluted, and their abode is Hell, a recompense for what they have done to earn (jazaa-an bimaa kaanuu yak’sibuuna).

[10;27] And those who have earned the evil deeds, a recompense of an evil deed is of like of it (jazaau sayyi-atin bi-mith’lihaa), and it will cover them a humiliation. There is no defender for them from God. As if it had been covered their faces with pieces of darkness of the night. Those are companions of the Fire, they will be dwellers in it forever.

[12:25] And they both had raced to the door, and she had torn his shirt from the back; and they had found her husband at the door. She said, “What is a recompense of whoever has intended evil with your wife (maa jazaau man araada bi-ahlika suuan), except that he would be imprisoned or a painful punishment?”

[12:74] They said, “What is a recompense of it if you have been liars (maa jazaauhu in kuntum kaadhibeena)?”

[12:75] They said, “Its recompense is whoever, in his bag it has been found (jazaauhu man wajida fee rahilihi), then he will be his recompense (fa-huwa jazaauhu). Thus that we recompense the wrong-doers.”

[17:63] He (God) said: “Go, then whoever has followed you (Iblis) from them (offspring of Adam), then indeed, Hell is your recompense (jahannama jazaaukum) – a recompense to be enough (jazaa-an mawfuuran).

[17:98] That is their recompense because of that they had disbelieved in our revelations (dhaalika jazaauhum biannahum kafaruu bi-aayaatinaa), and they said: “When we had been bones and particles, will we be resurrected as a new creation?”

[18:88] “And as for whoever has believed and has done as a righteous one, then for him is a good recompense (fa-la’hum jazaa-an al-hus’naa); and we will speak to him with ease of our command.”

[18:106] That is their recompense is Hell (dhaalika jazaauhum jahannamu), for that they had disbelieved and had taken My revelations and My messengers by mockery.

[20:76] Gardens of Eden, from underneath of them the rivers will flow, as dwellers therein forever. And that is a recompense of whoever has purified himself (wa-dhaalika jazaau man tazakkaa).

[25:15] Say, “Is that (Hell) better or Garden of the Eternity, which has been promised to the righteous? It has been for them a recompense and destination (kaanat lahum jazaa-an wa-maseeran).”

[32:17] So, no soul knows what has been hidden for them of an eye comfort as a recompense for what they have done to accomplish (jazaa-an bimaa kaanuu ya`maluuna).

[34:37] And neither your wealth nor your children can bring you closer to us in position, except whoever has believed and has done as a righteous one, then those – for them is two-fold recompense for what they have done (fa-ulaaika lahum jazaau al-di`fi bimaa amiluu), and they will be secure in the lofty mansions.

[39:34] For them is whatever they wish with their Lord. That is a recompense of the good doers (dhaalika jazaau al-muh’sineena).

[41:28] That is a recompense of enemies of God is the Fire (dhaalika jazaau a`daai allahi al-naaru); for them in it is a home of the Eternity as a recompense of what they had done to deny in our revelations (jazaa-an bimaa kaanuu bi-aayaatinaa yaj’haduuna).

[42:40] A recompense of an evil is evil like of it (jazaau sayyi-atin sayyi-atun mith’luhaa); so, whoever has pardoned and has made reconciliation, then his reward is upon God. Indeed, He does not love the wrongdoers.

[46:14] Those are companions of the Paradise will be dwellers in it forever as a recompense of what they had done to accomplish (jazaa-an bimaa kaanuu ya`maluuna).

[53:41] Then he will be recompensed for it the fullest recompense (thumma yuj’zaahu al-jazaa al-awfaa).

[54:14] Sailing on our eyes was a recompense for whoever had been denied (taj’ree bi-a`yuninaa jazaa-an li’man kaana kufira).

[55:60] Is there any recompense for the good except the good (hal jazaau al-ih’saani illaa al-ih’ssanu)?

[56:24] A recompense for what they have done to accomplish (jazaa-an bimaa kaanuu ya`maluuna).

[59:17] So, it has been an end of both of them that they will be in the Fire as dwellers therein forever. And that is a recompense of the wrongdoers (wa-dhaalika jazaau al-zaalimeena).

[76:9] “Only we feed you for a pleasure of God; we do not expect any recompense from you (laa-nureedu minkum jazaa-an), nor any gratefulness.”

[76:22] Indeed, this has been a recompense for you (inna haadhaa kaana lakum jazaa-an) and it has been your effort being appreciated.

[78:26] A recompense (of the transgressors) on reckoning (jazaa-an wifaaqan).

[78:36] A recompense (of the righteous)  from your Lord is a gift on reckoning (jazaa-an min rabbika `ataa-an hisaaban) .

[98:8] Their recompense with their Lord is gardens of Eden (jazaauhum `inda rabbihim jannaatu `adnin) from underneath of them the rivers will flow, as dwellers therein forever. God has been pleased with them and they have been pleased with Him. That is for whoever has feared his Lord.

Instance of jiz’yah

There is one instance of jiz’yah in the noun form meaning ‘jizyah’ in the following verse of the Quran:

[9:29] You shall fight those who do not believe in God, nor in the Last Day, nor do they forbid what God has forbidden and His messenger, nor do they acknowledge a religion of the truth from those who have been given the scripture, until they pay the tax from willingness (hatta yu’tuu jiz’yah `an yadin), and they are subdued.

Instance of jaz

There is one instance of jaz in the active participle form meaning ‘availing one’ in the following verse of the Quran:

[31:33] O the people, you shall fear your Lord and shall fear a Day, a father will not able to avail his son, nor a son will he be an availing one for his father anyway (wa-laa-mawluudun huwa jaazin `an waalidihi shayan). Indeed, a promise of God is truth. So, do not let the life of the world deceive you, nor let the deceiver deceive you about God.

Upon review the messages of 14 instances of jazaa in the verb form found in 13 verses of 9 surahs as well as of 42 instances of jazaa in the noun form found in 39 verses of 25 surahs and including instances jizyah and jaz, we may understand from instances of jazaa in the verb and noun form that God will recompense best for those who have done good and He will recompense  worse for those who have done evil, which is a promise of God is truth.

Those who have done good, their recompense is gardens of Eden from underneath of them the rivers will flow, as dwellers therein forever, which is the Paradise, a home of the Eternity as a recompense and destination for the righteous. For them it will be an eye comfort and in it they will have whatever they wish with their Lord, a recompense as a gift upon reckoning. On the other hand, those who have done evil deeds and have earned evil disbelieving and denying in God’s revelations, their recompense is Hell, a home of the Eternity for enemies of God and the wrongdoers upon reckoning as well, who had disbelieved and had taken His revelations and His messengers by mockery.

The review may help us to reflect to the warnings: which is better Hell or Paradise, a day a father cannot help his son or a son cannot help his father, and those who witnessed the messenger of covenant but denied him is a curse on them from God, the angels and all the people that we may repent and reform to be dwellers of the Paradise, a home of the Eternity for the righteous and the good doers as a recompense from God instead of to be dwellers of the Hell, a home of the Eternity for enemies of God and the wrongdoers as a recompense from God.
