Review instances of ilaah (إِلَٰه) in the Quran part III

A review of a group of Arabic words from the same root occurs 2849 times in the Quran as shown in the table below:

Note: The data in the above table obtained from the quran.com excluding one instance of ilaah and one instance of allah in the verse 9:129 which does not belong to the Quran.

Here are 146 instances of ilaah and 5 instances of allahumma in the Quran are reviewed to better understand the difference between ilaah and allah, even these two Arabic words sound very close to each other, and many of us cannot make a difference between ilaah meaning ‘god’ and allah meaning ‘God’ like rasuul meaning ‘messenger’ and nabiy meaning ‘prophet’.

Details of instances of ilaah

Out of 146, 46 instances of ilaah in 40 verses across 14 surahs in the Quran are detailed below, while we have already reviewed 100 instances of ilaah in 83 verses across 23 surahs in the Quran:

[28:38] And Pharaoh said, “O you elders, I have not known for you any god other than me (yaa’ayyuhaa al-mala-u maa `alim’tu lakum min ilaahin ghayri-i). So you shall kindle for me; O Haman, upon the clay that you build a tower for me that I may look at Moses’ god (fa-ij’`al lee sarhan la`alli-i attali`u ilaa ilaahi muusaa). And indeed, I think that he is with the liars.”

[28:70] And He is God: there is no god except He (wa-huwa allahu laa-ilaaha illaa huwa). To Him belongs all praise in the first life and the Hereafter. And to Him belongs the judgment and to Him you will be returned.

[28:71] Say, “Have you seen if God had made the night perpetual for you until a day of the Resurrection? Which god other than God could bring you of light (man ilaahun ghay’ru allahi yateekum bi-diyaain)? Would you not hear then?”

[28:72] Say, “Have you seen if God had made the daylight perpetual until a day of the Resurrection? Which god other than God could bring you of a night to rest in it (man ilaahun ghay’ru allahi yateekum bi-laylin taskunuuna feehi)? Would you not see then?”

[28:88] And not to call another god with God (wa-laa-tad’`u ma`a allahi ilaahan aakhara); there is no god except He (laa-ilaaha illaa huwa). Everything is ending except He Himself. To Him belongs the judgment and to Him you will be returned.

[29:46] And you do not argue with a people of the scripture except with which that it is best, except those who have done wrong from them and say: “We have believed in which has been sent to us and has been sent down to you, and our god and your god is One and to Him we are submitters (wa-ilaahunaa wa-ilaahukum waahidun wa-nah’nu lahu muslimuuna).”

[35:3] O people, you shall remember God’s favor upon you. Is there any creator other than God who provides for you from the sky and the earth? There is no god except He (laa-ilaaha illaa huwa). Then how are you deviated?

[36:23] Should I take gods other than Him (a-attakhidhu min duunihi aalihatan)? If the Most Gracious intends for me of any harm, their intercession will not help me in anything, nor will they save me.

[36:74] And they have taken gods other than God (wa-ittakhadhuu min duunihi allahi aalihatan) that they may be helped.

[37:4] Indeed, your god is surely One (inna ilaahukum la’waahidun).

[37:35] Indeed, they have done when there has been said to them, “There is no god except God (laa-ilaaha illaa allah)”, they turn arrogant.

[37:36] And they say, “Would we be surely abandoners of our gods for a crazy poet (a-innaa la’taarikuu aalihatinaa li’shaa`irin)? ”

[37:86] Is there falsehood – gods instead of God you desire (a-if’kan aalihatan duuna allahi tuuriduuna)?

[37:91] Then he (Abraham) had turned towards their gods (fa-raagha ilaa aalihatihim), then said, “Do you not eat?

[38:5] Has he made the gods into one god (a-ja`ala al-aalihata ilaahan waahidun)? Indeed, this is a strange thing.”

[38:6] The leaders from them announced that go on and be steadfast to your gods (im’shuu wa-is’biruu `alaa aalihatikum). Indeed, this is surely a thing is desired.

[38:65] Say, “Indeed, I am a warner; and there is no god except God – the One, the Supreme (wa-maa min ilaahin illaa allahu al-waahidu al-qahaaru).

[39:6] He has created you from one soul, then He has made its mate from it. And He has sent down for you eight kinds of livestock. He creates you in your mothers’ wombs, creation after creation through trimesters of darkness. That is God your Lord; to Him belongs the dominion. There is no god except He (laa-ilaaha illaa huwa). Then how are you deviated?

[40:3] Forgiver of the sin, Acceptor of the repentance, severe of the punishment, Possessor of the abundance. There is no god except He (laa-ilaaha illaa huwa). To Him is the final return.

[40:37] Ways of the heavens that I may look at Moses’ god (as’baaba al-samaawaati fa-attali`a ilaa ilaahi muusaa), and indeed, I surely think him a liar.” Thus that there has been made fair-seeming to Pharaoh of his evil deed, and he has been averted from the path. And Pharaoh’s plot was not except in ruin.

[40:62] That is God your Lord, Creator of all things. There is no god except He (laa-ilaaha illaa huwa). Then how are you deviated?

[40:65] He is the Living; there is no god except He (huwa al-hayyu laa-ilaaha illaa huwa). So, you shall call Him being sincere to Him in the religion. All praise to God, Lord of the worlds.

[41:6] Say, “I (Muhammad) am just a human being like yourselves; it is inspired to me that your god is One god (yuuhaa ilayya annamaa ilaahukum ilaahun waahidun). So you shall be straight to Him and shall ask His forgiveness.” And woe to the idol worshipers.

[43:45] And you (prophet) ask whom we have sent of our messenger before yourself; have we made gods other than the Gracious to be worshiped (a-ja`alnaa min duuni al-rahmaani aalihatan yu`baduuna)?”

[43:58] And they said, “Are our gods better, or he (a-aalihatunaa khayrun am huwa)?” They have not cited to you (prophet) except an argument. Nay, they are an argumentative people.

[43:84] And He is the One is god in the heaven and is god in the earth (wa-huwa alladhee fee al-samaai ilaahun wa-fee al-ardi ilaahun), and He is the Wise, the Knower.

[44:8] There is no god except He (laa-ilaaha illaa huwa). He gives life and causes death: your Lord and Lord of your fathers – the ancestors.

[45:23] Have you then seen whoever has taken his ego as god (a-fa-ara-ayta mani ittakhadhta ilaahahu hawaahu), and God has sent him astray having knowledge, and has put a seal upon his hearing and his heart, and has placed a veil on his vision? Then whoever can guide him after God? Then will you not take heed.

[46:22] They said, “Have you (Hud) come to us to turn us away from our gods (a-ji’tanaa li’tafikanaa `an aalihatinaa)? Then bring us of what you threaten us, if you have been truthful.”

[46:28] Then why has not helped them those whom they had taken other than God as a way of approaching gods (alladheena ittakhadhuu min duuni allahi qur’baanan aalihatan? Nay, they had lost from them, and that was their falsehood and what they had done to invent.

[47:19] So, you (Muhammad) shall know that there is no god except God (laa-ilaaha illaa allahu), and shall ask forgiveness for your (Muhammad) sin and for the believing men and the believing women. And God knows all of your return and all of your reward.

[50:26] The one who has made with God another god (alladhee ja`ala ma`a allahi ilaahun aakhara), so throw him into severe retribution.

[51:51] And you do not make with God another god (wa-laa-taj’`aluu ma`a allahi ilaahan aakhara); indeed, I am a clear warner to you from Him.

[52:43] Or is there a god for them other than God (am lahum ilaahun ghay’ru allahi? Glory to God, above what they associate.

[59:22] He is God Who is: there is no god except He (laa-ilaaha illaa huwa),  Knower of the unseen and the seen. He is the Gracious, the Merciful.

[59:23] He is God Who is: there is no god except He (laa-ilaaha illaa huwa) – the Sovereign, the Sacred, the Peace, the Faithful, the Guardian, the Almighty, the Powerful, the Supreme. Glory to God, above what they associate.

[64:13] God: there is no god except He (laa-ilaaha illaa huwa), and upon God then should put trust the believers.

[73:9] Lord of the east and the west: there is no god except He (laa-ilaaha illaa huwa). So you (prophet) shall take Him Advocate.

[114:3]god of the people (ilaahin al-naas).”

Details of instances of allahumma

5 instances of allahumma meaning ‘O God” found in 5 verses across 5 surahs in the Quran are detailed below:

[3:26] Say, “O God, Owner of the dominion (allahumma maalika al-mul’ki), You give the dominion to whomever You will and You take away the dominion from whomever You will, and You honor whomever You will and You humiliate whomever You will. In Your hand is the good. Indeed, You have power over everything.”

[5:114] Jesus, son of Mary said, “O God, our Lord, send down to us a feast from the heaven (allahumma rabbanaa anzil `alaynaa maaidatan mina al-samaai), it would be for us a festival for the first of us and last of us, and a sign from You. And provide for us and You are the best the Provider.”

[8:32] And when they (disbelievers) said, “O God, if this (what is being recited to them) has been is the truth from You (allahumma in kaana haadhaa huwa al-haqq min `indaka), then shower upon us stones from the sky, or bring us of a painful punishment.”

[10:10] Their prayer in it (Paradise) is: “Glory is Yours, O God (sub’haanaka allahumma).”, and their greeting in it (Paradise) is: “Peace.”, and the end of their prayer is: “All praise to God, Lord of the worlds.”

[39:46] Say: “O God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen (allahumma faatira al-samaawaati wa-al-ardi `alima al-ghaybi wa-al-shahaadati), You will judge between Your servants in what they have done to differ in it.”

Reviewing of 146 instances of ilaah found in 123 verses across 54 surahs, and 5 instances of allahumma found in 5 verses across 5 surahs in the Quran help us to make a clear difference between ilaah meaning “god” and allah meaning “God” eliminating misconception around us that these two Arabic words cannot be translated to any other languages. We may also have our clear understanding that God is our god being One god deserves all our praise and worship, while He is our Lord for providing us everything what we need in the life of the world (the first life) as well as what we need in the eternal life of the Hereafter, even He has attributed many gracious names to Himself making Him High, Great and Almighty that He is able to do what He needs to do to take care of us. Thus, whoever she/he is a Muslim would worship One god associating no partner(s) with God in her/his praise and prayer strengthening her/his heart reflecting that God Himself has borne witness that there is no god except He (3:18), and He has commanded His prophet that you shall know that there is no god except God (47:19) and His prophet has recited to the people that there is no god except God (38:65).

Even God has given us an opportunity to derive explicit proof not to have any doubt about it that there is no god except God from 146 instances of ilaah found in 123 verses across 54 surahs in the Quran if the total number of instances, verses and surahs are added, the sum is a multiple of 19 -> 146 + 123 + 54 = 323 (19X17). In addition, He has also blessed us to have explicit proof from a small set of crucial verses from occurrences of ilaah where God Himsel has borne witness that there is no god except He (3:18) as well as where He has taught His prophet that there is no god except God (47:19) and His prophet has recited it to the people that there is no god except God (38:65) if the relevant surah and verse numbers are added, the sum is a multiple of 19 -> [3 +18] + [47 +19] + [38 + 65] = 21 + 66 + 103 = 190 (19X10) where 19 is a common denominator to derive numerical fact from the text of the Quran for mathematical coding of the Quran.

Then is it not unfortunate to mention that the so-called observant Muslims all over the world who establish daily 5 times salat prayers and attend the Friday congressional prayer have corrupted their statement of faith “There is no god except God, Muhammad is a messenger of God,” which is also made logo of quran.com and publications of “The Review of Religions” by the London Mosque, 16 Gressenhall Road, England distorting what God has taught Muhammad in the Quran in the verse, 47:19 that you shall know that there is no god except God, and what he has recited to the people that there is no god except God (38:65)? Thus, unless they repent and reform realizing what they are doing for themselves, there is no good news for them, while they may think that they are doing great to get closer to God through Muhammad expecting his intercession on a day of the Judgment being deceived by the Satan and his allies.

Thus, the message from the review of instances of ilaah and allahumma and the 2-fold mathematical confirmation may help those who believe in God and are certain about the Hereafter to understand the distortion of declaration of the faith of Muslims adding Muhammad’s name to it as a messenger of God and erroneous expectation of his intercession on a day of the Judgment is the Satanic tricks to make them losers can prevent them from nullifying their deeds for idol worshiping to make him their idol, which is an unforgiveable sin (4:484:116) if maintained until death (25:70-71).
Peaceful Friday, salaam and God bless.
Tafazzal (12/22/2023).
