Review instances of hadaa and its derived in the Quran – V

Introduction

There are 316 instances of hadaa and its derived can broadly be classified into 8 groups as shown in the table below. The instances may have meanings based on their grammatical forms while an Arabic word may have different meanings in different contexts as well.

Instances of hudan

There are 85 instances of hudan in the noun form meaning “guidance” in 75 verses across 31  suras in the Quran are described below:

[2:2] That is the scripture – there is no doubt in it, is guidance for the righteous (hudan lil’muttaqeen).

[2:5] Those are on guidance (ulaaika alaa hudan) from their Lord, and those – they are the successful ones.

[2:16] Those are they who have purchased the straying for guidance (ish’tarwuu al-dalaalata bil-hudaa); so, their commerce has not increased, nor have they been guided ones.

[2:38 We said: “Go down from here, all of you; so, when has come to you guidance from Me (mininee hudan), then whoever has followed My guidance (fa-man tabi`a hudaaya), has no fear for them, nor will they grieve.”

[2:97 Say: “Whoever has been enemy to Gabriel, then indeed, he has brought it down by God’s permission into your (Muhammad) heart, confirming what was of its before, and a guidance and good news for the believers (wa-hudan wa-bush’raa lil’mu’mineena).”

[2:120] Neither the Jews nor the Christians will be pleased with you (Muhammad) unless you have followed their religion. Say: “Indeed, God’s guidance is the true guidance (inna hudaa allahi huwa al-hudaa).” And surely, if you have followed their wishes after what has come to you of the knowledge, there is no protector for you from God nor is there any helper.

[2:159] Indeed, those who conceal what we have revealed of the clear proofs and the guidance (mina al-bayyinaati wal-hudaa) after that we have made it clear for the people in the scripture; those God curses them and those who curse will curse them.

[2:175] Those are they who have purchased the straying for the guidance (ish’tarwuu al-dalaalata bil-hudaa), and the punishment for the forgiveness, is what their endurance on the Fire.

[2:185] Ramadan which is a month, has been sent down in it the Quran as a guidance for the people, and clear proofs of the guidance (al-qur’aana hudan lilnnaasi wa-bayyinaatin mina al-hudaa) and the statute book. So whoever among you has witnessed the month, then he should fast in it, and whoever has been ill or on a journey then the prescribed number from other days. God wishes ease for you and He does not wish hardship for you, and that you may complete the prescribed number, and that you may glorify God through which He has guided you and that you may appreciate.

[2:272] It has not been upon you (Muhammad) is their guidance (laysa `alayka hadaahum), but God guides whomever He wills. And whatever of good you spend is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking for God’s pleasure. And whatever of good you spend will be repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.

[3:4] From before there is guidance for the people (min qablu hudan lilnnasi), and He has revealed the statute book. Indeed, those who have disbelieved in God’s revelations, for them is a severe punishment, and God is Al-mighty, possessor of retribution.

[3:73] “And you will not believe except whoever has followed your religion.” Say: “Indeed, the true guidance is God’s guidance (inna al-hudaa hudaa allahi), that is given one like of what has been given to you, or they may argue with you at your Lord.” Say: “The bounty is in God’s hand, He gives it to whomever He wills, and God is Bounteous, Knower.”

[3:96] Indeed, the first House has been established for the people, which is in Bakka, a blessed and guidance (mubaarakan wa-hudan) for the people of the world.

[3:138] This is a clear explanation for the people, and guidance and admonition for the righteous (wa-hudan wa-maw`izatun lil’muttaqeena).

[4:115] And whoever opposes the messenger after what has made clear to him the guidance (maa tabayyana lahu al-huda), and he follows other than path of the believers, we turn him to what he has turned and we will burn him in Hell, and it has been evil a destination.

[5:44] Indeed, we have revealed the Torah, in it is guidance and light (feehaa hudan wa-nuurun); the prophets who have submitted judged with it for those who have been Jews, as well as the rabbis and the priests for what they have been entrusted of God’s scripture and they have been witnesses over it. So, you do not fear the people while you shall fear Me; and you do not purchase with My revelations for a little price. And whoever does not judge with what God has revealed, then those – they are the disbelievers.

[5:46] And we have sent in their footsteps with Jesus, son of Mary, confirming that which was before his of the Torah. And we have given him the Gospel, in it is guidance and light, and confirming that which was before his of the Torah, and guidance and admonition (wa-hudan wa-maw`izatun) for the righteous.

[6:35] And if their aversion has been difficult for you, then you have been able that you could seek a tunnel in the earth, or a ladder to the heavens, and come to them with a sign; and if God had willed, surely, He would have gathered them on the guidance (la’jama`ahum `alaa al-hudaa). So, you do not be with the ignorant ones.

[6:71] Say: “Do we call upon other than God, which cannot benefit us or harm us, and we turn back on our heels after that God has guided us?” Like the one whom has enticed the devils in the earth, is confused – to him are companions who call him to the guidance (lahu ashaabun yad`uunahu ilaa al-hudaa): “Come to us!” Say: “Indeed, God’s guidance is the true guidance (inna hudaa allahi huwa al-hudaa), and we have been commanded that we submit to Lord of the worlds.”

[6:88] That is God’s guidance (dhaalika hudan allahi), He guides with it whomever He wills of His servants. And if they have associated partners, surely, it has been worthless for them what they have done to accomplish.

[6:90] Those are the ones whom God has guided, so of their guidance you (Muhammad) shall follow (fa-bi-hudaahumu iq’tadih). Say: “I do not ask you any reward for it; it is not but a reminder for the people of the world.”

[6:91] And they have not appraised God a true of His appraisal as they said: “God has not revealed anything to any human being.” Say: “Who has revealed the scripture which Moses had brought with it light and guidance for the people (alladhee jaa-a bihi muusaa nuuran wa-hudan lilnnasi)? You make it parchments, disclosing of it, while concealing a lot; and you have been taught what neither you nor you forefathers.” Say: “God.” Then you (Muhammad) shall leave them in their discourse to play.

[6:154] Then we have given Moses the scripture, complete for the one who has done good, and an explanation of all things, and guidance and mercy (tamaaman `alaa alladhee ahsana wa-tafseelan likulli shayin wa-hudan wa-rahmatan) that they may believe in meeting of their Lord.

[6:157] Or you say: “If that the scripture had been revealed to us, surely, we would have been better guided than they!” So certainly, has come to you a clear proof from your Lord, and guidance and mercy (fa-qad jaa-akum bayyinatun min rabbikum wa-hudan wa-rahmatan). Then who is more wicked than whoever has denied in God’s revelations and has turned away from them? We will punish those who turn away from Our revelations an evil punishment for what they have done to turn away.

[7:52] And certainly, we have come to them with a scripture, we have explained it with knowledge – guidance and mercy for a people who believe (hudan wa-rahmatan li’qawmin yu’minuuna).

[7:154] And when had calmed down the anger from Moses, he took the tablets; and in their inscription – guidance and mercy for those who – they fear of their Lord (hudan wa-rahmatan lilladheena hum lirabbihim yarhabuuna).

[7:193] And if you (all) call them to the guidance (wa-in tad`uuhum ilaa al-hudaa), they will not follow you. It is the same whether you have called them or you are being silent.

[7:198] And if you call them to the guidance (wa-in tad`uuhum ilaa al-hudaa), they do not listen. And you see them looking at you, while they do not see.

[7:203] And when you do not come to them with a sign, they say: “Why have you not devised it?” Say: “I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This is enlightenment from your Lord, and guidance and mercy for a people who believe (wa-hudan wa-rahmatun liqawmin yu’minuuna).”

[9:33] He is the One who has sent His messenger with the guidance and religion of the truth (rasuulahu bil-hudaa wa-deeni al-haqqi) to make it prevail over the religion of its any other, even though has disliked the idol worshippers.

[10:57] O the people, has come to you admonition from your Lord and healing for what is in the chests, and guidance and mercy for the believers (wa-human wa-rahmatun lil’mu’mineena).

[12:111] Certainly, there has been a lesson in their stories for a people of the intelligence. It has not been a statement invented, but a confirmation of that which was its before, and an explanation of all things, and guidance and mercy (wa-hudan wa-rahmatan) for a people who believe.

[16:37] If you desire for their guidance (in tahris `alaa hadaahum), then indeed, God does not guide whomever He lets go astray, and there are no helpers for them.

[16:64] And we have not revealed the scripture through you (Muhammad) except that you make clear to them that which they have disputed in it, and guidance and mercy to a people who believe (wa-hudan wa-rahmatan liqawmin yu’minuuna).

[16:89] And a day we raise in every community a witness over them from themselves, and we have brought you as a witness over these and we have revealed through you the scripture – a clarification for all things and guidance and mercy and good news for the submitters (tib’yaanan likulli shayin wa-hudan wa-rahmatan wa-bush’raa lil’mus’limeena).

[16:102] Say: “The holy spirit has brought it down from your Lord with the truth to strengthen those who have believed, and guidance and good news for the submitters (wa-hudan wa-rahmatan wa-bush’raa lil’mus’limeena).”

[17:2] And we have given Moses the scripture and we have made it guidance for the Children of Israel (wa-ja`alnaahu hudan libanee is’raa-eela) that you are not to take an Guardian other than Me.

[17:94] And what has prevented the people that they do not believe when the guidance has come to them (idhaa jaa-ahumu al-hudaa), except that they said: “Has God sent a human messenger?”

[18:13] We narrate through you their story with the truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and we increased them in guidance (wa-zid’naahum hudan).

[18:55] And what has prevented the people that they do not believe when the guidance has come to them (idh jaa-ahumu al-hudaa), and ask forgiveness of their Lord except that the way of the former comes to them, or the punishment comes before.

[18:57] And who is more wicked than whoever has been reminded with his Lord’s revelations while he has turned away from them and has forgotten what has sent forth his hands. Indeed, we have made veils upon their hearts from understanding it and deafness in their ears. And if you call them to the guidance (wa-in tad`uhum ilaa al-hudaa), then they never ever guide then.

[19:76] And God increases guidance (wa-yazeedu allahu) of those who have accepted guidance while the enduring righteous deeds are better with your Lord for reward and are better for return.

[20:10] When he had seen a fire, then he said to his family: “Stay here, indeed me, I have seen a fire, that I can bring from it light, or I can find guidance on the fire (ajidu `alaa al-nari hudan).”

[20:47] So go (both) to him (Pharaoh) and say: “Indeed, we (both) are messengers of your Lord that  send Children of Israel with us and you are not to torment them. Certainly, we have come to you with a sign from your Lord, and the peace upon whoever has followed the guidance (wal-salaamu `alaa mani ittaba`a al-hudaa).”

[20:123] He said: “God down from here, all of you, one of you enemy to another. So, when guidance comes to you from Me (fa-imma yatiyannakum minnee hudan), then whoever has followed My guidance, will not go astray nor will he suffer.”

[22:8] And among the people whoever argues about God without any knowledge nor guidance nor an enlightening scripture (bighayri wa-laa hudan wa-laa kitaabin muneerin).

[27:2] A guidance and good news for the believers (hudan wa-bush’raa lil’mu’mineena).

[27:77] And indeed, it is surely, a guidance and mercy for the believers (wa-innahu hudan wa-rahmatun lil’mu’mineena).

[28:37] And Moses said: “My Lord is best knower of whoever has come with the guidance of Him from Him (bi-man jaa-a bil-hudaa min `indihu) and who will for him be the good end in the Hereafter. Indeed, he will not succeed of the wicked.”

[28:43] And certainly, we have given Moses the scripture after that what we had destroyed the former generations, as good news for the people and a guidance and mercy that they may take heed (basaaira lilnnaasi wa-hudan wa-rahmatan la`allahum yatadhakkaruuna).

[28:50] So if they do not respond to you, then know that only what they follow of their desires. And whoever is more astray than who has followed his own desire, without guidance from God (mimman ittaba`a hawaahu bighayri hudan mina allahi)? God does not guide the wicked people.

[28:57] And they said: “If we follow the guidance with you (in nattabi`i al-hudaa ma`aka), we will be swept from our land.” Have we not establish for them a secure sanctuary, are brought to it all kinds of fruits are offered, a provision from us? But most of them do not know.

[28:85] Indeed, the One who has decreed the Quran upon you surely, will take you back to a place of return. Say: “My Lord is best of who has come with the guidance (rabbi-i a`lamu man jaa`a bil-hudaa), and who – he is in clear error.”

[31:3] A guidance and mercy for the good doers (hudan wa-rahmatan lil’muh’sineen).

[31:5] Those are on guidance from their Lord (ulaaika `alaa hudan min rabbihim), and those – they are the successful ones.

[31:20] Do you not see that God has committed for you what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and has bestowed upon you His apparent and hidden blessings? And of the people whoever disputes about God without knowledge, nor guidance, nor an enlightening scripture (man yajaadilu fee allahi bighayri `ilmin wa-laa-hudan wa-laa-kitaabin muneerin).

[32:13] And if we had willed, surely, we would have given every soul its guidance (la’aataynaa kulla nafsin hudaahaa), but it has been the true word from Me, surely, I will fill Hell with the Jinn and the human all together.

[32:23] And certainly, we have given Moses the scripture that you would not be in any doubt about His meeting. And we have made it a guidance for Children of Israel (wa.-ja`alnaahu hudan li’banee israa-eela).

[34:24] Say: “Who provides you from the heavens and the earth?” Say: “God. And indeed, either we or you are surely, upon guidance (wa-innaa aw iyyakum la’`alaa hudan), or in clear error.”

[34:32] Said those who have been arrogant to those who have prevented: “Have we diverted you from the guidance (a’nahnu sadaknaakum `ani al-hudaa) after it had come to you? Nay, you have criminals.”

[39:23] God has revealed a scripture of the best statement being consistent to each other. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (Quran), then their skins and their hearts soften up to God’s message. That is God’s guidance (dhaalika hudan allahi), He guides with it (Quran) whomever He wills; and whomever God lets go astray, then there is no guide for him.

[40:53] And certainly, we have given Moses the guidance (wa-laqad aataynaa muusaa al-hudaa) and we have the scripture inherit to Children of Israel.

[40:54] A guidance and a reminder for those of understanding (hudan wa-dhikraa liulee al-albaabi).

[41:17] And as for Thamud, even though we guided them, while they preferred the blindness over the guidance (fa-is’tahabbu al`amaa `alaa al-hudaa). So, a thunderbolt, the humiliating punishment seized them of what they had done to earn

[41:44] And if we had made it a non-Arabic Quran, they would have said, “Why not its verses are explained in detail?” Is it non-Arabic or Arabic? Say, “It is for those who have believed, is a guidance and a healing (huwa lilladheena aamanuu hudan wa-shifaaun) but those who do not believe, there is a deafness in their ears and have a blindness for them to it. Those are being addressed from faraway.”

[45:11] This is a guidance (haadhaa hudan), and those who have disbelieved in their Lord’s revelations, for them there is a painful punishment for corrupt behavior.

[45:20] This has enlightenments for the people, and a guidance and mercy for a people who can ascertain (wa-hudan wa-rahmatun liqawmin yuuqinuuna)

[47:25] Indeed, those who have turned on their backs, after that what has become clear to them of the guidance (min ba’di maa tabayyana lahum al-huda), the Satan has enticed to them and has extended hope for them.

[47:32] Indeed, those who have disbelieved and have turned away God’s path, and have opposed the messenger after that what has become clear to them of the guidance (min ba’di maa tabayyana lahum al-huda), they will not harm God in anything and He will make worthless their deeds.

[48:28] He is the One who sent His messenger with the guidance and the true religion (rasuulahu bil-hudaa wa-deeni al-haqqi) that He would make it prevail over the religion of any of it. And God has sufficed as a Witness.

[53:23] This is not but of names you have named them – you and your forefathers. God has not sent down any power with them. They do not follow except the conjecture and what the souls desire, and certainly, has come to them the guidance from their Lord (jaa-ahum min rabbihim al-hudaa).

[61:9] He is the One who sent His messenger with the guidance and the true religion rasuulahu bil-hudaa wa-deeni al-haqqi) that He would make it prevail over the religion of any of it, even though the disbelievers dislike.

[72:13] And that when we have heard the guidance (wa-annaa lammaa sami`naa al-hudaa), we have believed in it. So whoever believes in his Lord, then he will not fear any loss, nor any burden.

[92:12] Indeed, upon us is the guidance (inna `alaynaa al-hudaa).

[96:11] Have you seen whether he has been on the guidance (ara-ayta in kaana `alaa al-hudaa)?

In brief, what God has revealed is best and He has sent His messenger with the guidance and the true religion, which is mercy and healing for the people to be good-doers. Thus, those who have believed and followed His guidance are in His path but those who have disbelieved in their Lord’s revelations, there is a painful punishment for them for their corrupt behavior being God’s system from the past.
