Surah al-Munaafiquun (Surah 63: Revelation order 104)

God bears witness that the hypocrites are liars

  • When there has come the hypocrites to you (Muhammad) they said, “We bear witness that you are surely a messenger of God.” God knows that you are surely His messenger, and God bears witness that the hypocrites are surely liars (63:1). They have taken oaths of them as cover that they have turned away from a path of God. Indeed, it has been evil what they have done to commit (63:2). That is of that they have believed, then they have disbelieved. So there has been sealed around their hearts that they do not understand (63:3).
Note: The statement of the hypocrites referring to the prophet you are a messenger of God when they had come to him indicates that those who have claimed Muslims but have corrupted their Shahaadah adding Muhammad’s name as messenger of God to it have made them hypocrites making the similar statement like the hypocrites who are proven liars and there are seal around their hearts not to understand what is right for them being the disbelievers.

Advice for the prophet about the hypocrites

  • And when you have seen them, you may please by their looks. And if they speak, you may listen to their speech as if they are pieces of popped up wood. They think that every call is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. God may destroy them. How are they deviated? (63:4). And when it has been said them, “Come, God’s messenger will ask forgiveness for you,” they have turned their heads, and you have seen them to turn away, while they are arrogant (63:5). It is same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them, or you do not ask forgiveness for them, God will not forgive them. Indeed, God does not guide the people who are the disobedient (63:6).
Note: The hypocrites may show up to please the prophet but they are the real enemies of the believers, even the prophet would ask forgiveness for them God will not forgive them as God does not guide the disobedient people.

The hypocrites prevented to help those who were with the prophet

  • They are those who say, “You do not spend on whoever is with a messenger of God until they disband.” And to God belongs treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not comprehend (63:7). They say, “If we have returned to the city, the powerful will evict the humble from it, and to God belongs the honor, and to His messenger, and to the believers. But the hypocrites do not know (63:8).
Note: The hypocrites prevented to help those who had been with the messenger of God being unaware that treasures belong to God, while they were away from the prophet to support him with an excuse.

God has asked the believers to be charitable and righteous

  • O you who have believed, there should do not divert your wealth nor your children from remembering of God. And whoever does that then those – they are the losers (63:9). And you shall spend from what we have provided you before that there has come the death to anyone of you, then he says, “My Lord, why have You not delayed me for a short term that I would give charity and would be with the righteous.” (63:10). And God does not delay for a soul when there has come its term, and God is Cognizant of what you do. (63:11).
Note: Our wealth and children should not be an impediment for us to remember God knowing that when the death comes to us there would be no delay, nor would there be given another chance to be righteous.

Surah al-Munaafiquun (The Hypocrites) is a short surah consisting of 11 verses, is an opportunity for us to verify ourselves whether we are believers or hypocrites, and can be reviewed reflecting that God has warned His prophet about the hypocrites as they were liars and what they said was not in their hearts. He has placed seal around their hearts not to understand what is right for them and has cited them as an example for the Muslims that they do not corrupt their statement of faith. But the hypocrites were real enemies to the prophet and the believers, while they had committed crime preventing to help those who had believed with the prophet. On the other hand, the believers are those who avoid the hypocrites as well as remember God and spend from what He has given them not being distracted by their wealth and children knowing that there will be no delay when their death comes to them, nor will there be given another chance to be righteous amending their mistakes.
Peaceful Friday, salaam and God bless.
