Surah al-Balad (Surah 90: Revelation Order 35)

Oath of God

  • Nay (no doubt)! I swear by this town (90:1). And the town you are in this (90:2). And a begetter and what he has begotten (90:3).
  • Note: This is a multiple statement oath of God referring to the city of Mecca, and the city which has been birth place of prophet, and those who have begotten as well as those who have been begotten.

Mankind has been created to strive for the cause of God

  • Certainly, we have created the human in the cause of striving (90:4). Does he think that anyone does not have power over him? (90:5). He says, “I have spent abundant wealth!” (5:6). Does he think that anyone does not see him? (90:7). Do we not make for him two eyes (90:8), and a tongue and two lips? (90:9). And have we not shown him the two paths? (90:10). Then he has not strived for the steep path (90:11).
  • Note: By taking oath God has affirmed that He has created the human to strive for His cause and He is aware what he is doing. He has given him two eyes, and a tongue and two lips and has shown him two paths that he can choose the steep path to strive for His cause what he has not done.

God has specified the steep path for us

  • And what has made you know what the steep path is? (90:12). Freeing a slave (90:13). Feeding at time of hunger (90:14). Orphan of near relation (90:15). Or a needy when he is in misery (90:16).
  • Note: God has specified the steep path for us which are freeing slave, feeding during the famine as well as feeding of orphan and poor to understand it better so that we do not miss it.

God makes it clear who will be right or left on a day of Judgment

  • Then he has been of those who have believed, and has enjoined of patience, and has enjoined of compassion (90:17). Those are companions of the right (90:18). And those who have disbelieved in our revelations, they are companions of the left (90:19). Over them there will be Fire in confined (90:20).
  • Note: Those who have strived in the steep path for the cause of God as well as have believed, enjoined of patience and of compassion will be on the right on a day of the Judgment will be allowed to admit into Paradise, but those who have disbelieved in His revelations will be on the left on that day will be kept confined in the Fire.

Surah al-balad (Surah 90: The Town ) is an earlier revelation and a short surah consisting of 20 simple verses has addressed why human being has been created, and by taking oath God has affirmed that He has created him to strive in the steep path for His cause to admit into Paradise so that he has not been confined in the Hellfire for disbelieving in His revelations.
Peaceful Friday, salaam and God bless.
