Review instances of saalihaat (صَّٰلِحَٰت) in the Quran

Introduction

There are 129 instances of salaha and its derived forms, and in the verb (2), active participle related to person (65) and active participle related to deeds (62) forms as shown in the table below: These instances are being reviewed to have clear understanding from the Quran in different contexts about how we can be righteous or what we need to practice to become righteous to God to deserve reward with Him while establishing perfect belief and practice according to Quran can only help us to achieve this goal.

Instances of saalihaat

There are 62 instances of saalihaat in the active participle form meaning “righteous deeds” found in the Quran in 61 verses across 36 suras are described below:

[2:25] And you shall give good news to those who believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-bashari alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), that for them there are gardens, the rivers flow of their underneath. Every time they have been provided therefrom of fruit as provision, they have said: “This is what we have been provided of before.” And they have been given the like of it, and for them there are purified spouses therein, and they will be abiding therein forever.

[2:82] And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), those are companions of the Garden (Paradise), wherein they will be abiding forever.

[2:277] Indeed, those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (inna alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), and have observed the contact prayer, and have given the obligatory charity, for them there are their rewards with their Lord, and there is no fear for them nor will they grieve.

[3:57] And as for those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-ammaa alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), then God will pay them their reward; while God does not love the wrongdoers.

[4:34] The men are supporters of the women because of that God has given them responsibility over others, and because of that they have spent from their money. So, the righteous women are obedient of guarding in private of what God has guarded (fal-saalihaatu qaanitaatun haafizaatun lil’ghaybi bimaa hafiza allahu). And those whom (women) you fear of their rebellion, then you shall advise them, and shall abandon them in the bed, and shall disregard them. So if they have obeyed you, then you should not seek a way against them; indeed, God is High, Great.

[4:57] And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), we will admit them to gardens, the rivers flow of their underneath, are abiding therein forever. For them there are purified spouses therein, and we will admit them to a protected shade.

[4:122] And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), we will admit them gardens, the rivers flow of their underneath, are abiding therein forever. A promise of God is truth, and who is more truthful in saying than God?

[4:124] And whoever does of the righteous deeds from a male or a female (wa-man ya`mal mina al-saalihaati min dhakarin aw unthaa), while he is a believer, then those will admit to the Garden (Paradise), and they will not be wronged of the speck on a date seed.

[4:173] Then as for those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (fa-ammaa aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), He will give them their rewards and will increase for them from His bounty. And as for those who disdained and had been arrogant, then He will punish them a painful punishment, and they will not find other than God any protector nor any helper.

[5:9] God has promised those who have believed and has done the righteous deeds (wa`ada Allahu alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), for them there is a forgiveness and a great reward.

[5:93] It has not been any sin upon those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds in what they ate when they have feared (God) (laysa `alaa alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati junaahun feemaa ta`imuu idhaa maa ittaqaw) and have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), then they have feared and have believed; then they have feared (God) and have done good, and God loves the good doers.

[7:42] And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati); we do not burden any soul beyond its capacity; those are companions of the Garden (Paradise), they are therein will be abiding forever.

[10:4] To Him is all your return. God’s promise is true. He initiates the creation then He will repeat it that He will reward those who have believed and has done the righteous deeds with the justice (liyajziya alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati bil-qis’ti), and those who disbelieved, for them there will be drink of boiling fluid and a painful punishment for what they used to disbelieve.

[10:9] Indeed, those who have believed and has done the righteous deeds (inna alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), their Lord will guide them by their faith. The rivers will flow of their underneath in the gardens of Bliss.

[11:11] Except those who have been patient and have done the righteous deeds (illaa alladheena sabaruu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati); those, for them there is a forgiveness and a great reward.

[11:23] Indeed, those who have believed and has done the righteous deeds (inna alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), and humbled themselves to their Lord; those are companions of the Garden (Paradise), they will be abiding therein forever.

[13:29] Those who have believed, and has done the righteous deeds (alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), there is happiness for them and an excellent abode.

[14:23] And will be admitted those who have believed and has done the righteous deeds to Gardens (wa-ud’khila alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati jannaatin), the rivers flow of their underneath, will be abiding therein forever by permission of their Lord; their greetings therein will be “Peace.”

[17:9] Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most straight and gives good news to the believers those who do the righteous deeds (al-mu’mineena alladheena ya`maluuna al-saalihaati) that for them, there is a great reward.

[18:2] It is straight that it may warn of a severe punishment from Him, and may give good news to the believers those who do the righteous deeds (al-mu’mineena alladheena ya`maluuna al-saalihaati) that for them, there is a good reward.

[18:30] Indeed, those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (inna alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati); indeed, we do not waste reward of whoever has done good deeds.

[18:46] The wealth and the children are joy of the life of the world while the enduring righteous deeds are better with your Lord for reward and are better for hope (wal-baaqiyaatu al-saalihaatu khayrun `inda rabbika thawaaban wa-khayrun amalan).

[18:107] Indeed, those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (inna alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), has been for them gardens of the great pleasure as an abode.

[19:76] And God increases guidance of those who have accepted guidance while the enduring righteous deeds are better with your Lord for reward and are better for return (wal-baaqiyaatu al-saalihaatu khayrun `inda rabbika thawaaban wa-khayrun maraddan).

[19:96] Indeed, those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (inna alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), the Most Gracious will bestow love for them.

[20:75] And whoever comes to Him as a believer, certainly, he has done the righteous deeds (wa-man yatihi mu’minan qad `amila al-saalihaati), then those, for them are the highest ranks.

[20:112] And whoever does of the righteous deeds, and he is a believer (wa-man ya`mal mina al-saalihaati wa-huwa mu’minun), then he should not fear injustice nor deprivation.

[21:94] So whoever does of the righteous deeds, and he is a believer (wa-man ya`mal mina al-saalihaati wa-huwa mu’minun), then there is no rejection of his effort and indeed, we are recorders for him.

[22:14] Indeed, God will admit those who believed and have done the righteous deeds (inna allaha yud’khilu alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati) to gardens, flowing the rivers of their underneath. Indeed, God does whatever He intends.

[22:23] Indeed, God will admit those who believed and have done the righteous deeds (inna allaha yud’khilu alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati) to gardens, flowing the rivers of their underneath, they will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments will be therein of silk.

[22:50] So those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (fa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), for them there is a forgiveness and an honorable provision.

[22:56] The sovereignty on that day will belong to God, He will judge between them. So those who have believed and has done the righteous deeds, will be in gardens of the Bliss (fa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati fee jannaatin al-na`eem).

[24:55] God has promised those among you who believed and has done the righteous deeds (wa`ada allahu alladheena aamanuu minkum wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati); surely, He will make them successors in the earth, as He made successors those of their before, and surely, He will establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them, and surely, He will substitute security for them of after their fear, they worship Me, they do not associate anything with Me. And whoever disbelieved after that, then those, they are the defiant.

[26:227] Except those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (illaa alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati) and have remembered God more frequent, and have defended after of what they had been wronged. And will know those who have wronged to what is a return they will return.

[29:7] And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), surely, we will remove from them their evil deeds and surely, we will reward them best of what they used to do.

[29:9] And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), surely, we will admit them with the righteous.

[29:58] And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), surely, we will give them place in the Garden of lofty mansions, the rivers flow of its underneath, will be abiding therein forever. Excellent is reward of the workers.

[30:15] Then as for those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (fa-ammaa alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), so, they will be delighted in a Garden.

[30:45] That He will reward those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds of His bounty (liyajziya alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati min fadlihi). Indeed, He does not love the disbelievers.

[31:8] Indeed, those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (inna alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), for them, there will be gardens of the Bliss.

[32:19] As for those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (ammaa alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), for them, there are gardens of the Refuge as hospitality for what they used to do.

[34:4] That He will reward those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (liyajziya alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati). Those, for them there is a forgiveness and an honorable provision.

[35:7] Those who disbelieved, for them there is a severe punishment, and those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), for them there is a forgiveness and a great reward.

[38:24] He said: “Certainly, he has wronged you by asking your ewe to his ewes. And indeed, many of the partners certainly oppress on one another, except those who believed and have done the righteous deeds (illaa alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), and they are a few.” And David thought that we had tested him, so he asked forgiveness of his Lord , and fell down bowing, and repented.

[38:28] Or should we treat those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (am naj’`alu alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati) as we treat the corruptors in the earth? Or should we treat the righteous as we treat the wicked?

[40:58] And it does not equal the blind and the seer, and those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), nor the evildoers. Little is what you reflect.

[41:8] Surely, those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (inna alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), for them there is a no ending reward.

[42:22] You will see the wrongdoers are the fearful of what they had earned and it will be the befalling with them. And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds will be in flowering meadows of the Gardens (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati fee rawdaati al-jannaati). For them is whatever they wish from their Lord. That what is the great blessing.

[42:23] That is what is God gives good news to His servants, those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati). Say, “I do not ask you any reward for it except for the love among the relatives.” And whoever earns any good, we increase good therein for him. Indeed, God is Forgiving, Appreciative.

[42:26] He answers those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-yastajeebu alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), and increases them of His blessing. And the disbelievers, for them there is a severe punishment.

[45:21] Or has he thought of those who have committed evil deeds that we will make them equal their life and their death like those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (ka-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati)? It has been evil what they judge.

[45:30] Then as for those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (fa-ammaa alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati) that their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That, it is the evident success.

[47:2] And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (wa-alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), and have believed in what has been revealed through Muhammad and it is the truth from their Lord – He has removed their evil deeds from them and has improved their condition.

[47:12] Indeed, God will admit those who have believed and has done the righteous deeds to gardens (inna allaha yud’khilu alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati jannaatin), the rivers flow of their underneath. And those who disbelieved, they will enjoy and eat as the cattle eat, and the Fire will be an abode for them.

[48:29] Muhammad, a messenger of God and those who are with him are stern on the disbelievers, are merciful between themselves. You see them in bowing and prostrating, they seek God’s blessing and pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from an evident of the prostration. That is their example in the Torah. And their example in the Gospel is like a seed has brought forth its shoot, then it has strengthened it, then it has become thick, then it has stood straight on its stem, pleasing the growers that He may enrage the disbelievers by them. God has promised those who believed and has done the righteous deeds of them (wa`ada allahu alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati minhum), there is a forgiveness and a great reward.

[65:11] A messenger (message) recites to you clear revelations of God that it may bring those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds out of the darkness into the light (li’yukhrija alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati min al-zulumaati ilaa al-nuuri). And whoever believes in God and does as righteous, He will admit him into gardens, the rivers flow of their underneath, is abiding therein forever. Certainly, God has granted for him a good provision.

[84:25] Except those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), for them there is a no ending reward.

[85:11] Indeed, those who have believed and has done the righteous deeds (inna alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), for them there are gardens, the rivers flow of their underneath. That is the great reward.

[95:6] Except those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), for them there is a no ending reward.

[98:7] Indeed, those who have believed and has done the righteous deeds (inna alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), those who are best of the creatures.

[103:3] Except those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds (alladheena aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati), and they have enjoined (each other) of the truth and have enjoined (each other) of the patient.

  • Those who believed and have done the righteous deeds are neither the blind nor the evildoers.
  • Those who believed and have done the righteous deeds for them there is a no ending reward.
  • Those who committed evil deeds thought that we will make them equal their life and their death like those who believed and have done the righteous deeds.
  • Those who believed and did the righteous deeds get into God’s mercy, is the evident success.
  • Those who believed and have done the righteous deeds, and believed in what has been revealed through Muhammad, God has removed the evil deeds from them and has improved their condition.

In conclusion, the review of instances of saalihaat including instances of saalihan confirms that a believer can be righteous through his righteous deeds to get into God’s mercy as He has promised His forgiveness and a great reward for those who believed and have done the righteous deeds. While a messenger which recites a clear revelation of God can help them bring out of darkness into light and can also help them admit and abide forever in the blissful Paradise provided with endless provision.
