Review instances of jannat (جَنَّة) in the Quran – Part II

Introduction

There are 147 of instances closely related Arabic words in the Quran in 2 forms: (1) jannat meaning garden and (2) al-jannat meaning Paradise as shown in the table below while we know that an Arabic word may have a range of meanings depending on context, which is a key concept to understand the message coded in the Arabic text of the Quran:

Instances of jannat

Out of 96 instances of jannat in the Quran, 54 instances in 52 verses across 22 suras are already reviewed while 42 instances in 41 verses across 33 suras are described below:

[35:33] Gardens of Eden (jannaatu `adnin), they will enter them. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls, and their garments therein will be of silk.

[36:34] And we have made therein gardens of date palms and grapevines (wa-ja`alnaa feehaa jannaatin min nakheelin wa-a`naabin), and we have caused therein to gush out springs.

[37:43] In gardens of the Bliss (fee jannaatin al-na`eem).

[38:50] Gardens of Eden (jannaati `adnin);are opened for them the gates.

[40:8] “Our Lord, and admit them to Gardens of Eden (wa-adkhilhum jannaatin `adnin) which You have promised them and whoever has become righteous from their fathers, their spouses, and their children. Indeed, You are the Almighty, the Wise.”

[42:22] You will see the wrongdoers are the fearful of what they had earned and it will be the befalling with them. And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds will be in flowering meadows of the Gardens (wa-alladheena `aamanuu wa-`amiluu saalihaati fee rawdaati al-jannaati). For them is whatever they wish from their Lord. That what is the great blessing.

[44:25] How many gardens and springs have they left behind (lam tarakuu min jannaatin wa`uyuunin).

[44:52] In gardens and springs (fee jannaatin wa`uyuunin).

[47:12] Indeed, God will admit those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds to gardens flowing the rivers of their beneath (inna allaha yudkhilu alladheena `aamanuu wa-`amiluu al-saalihaati jannaatin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru), and those who have disbelieved, they will enjoy and will eat as eat the cattle, and the Fire will be abode for them.

[48:5] That He may admit the believing men and the believing women into gardens  flowing the rivers of their underneath, is abiding therein forever (liyud’khila al-mu’mineena wal-mu’minaati jannaatin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru khaalideena feehaa abadan), and He will remove their sins from them, and has been that with God a great success.

[48:17] There has been no blame on the blind, nor on the cripple, nor on the sick. And whoever obeys God and His messenger, He will admit him into gardens flowing the rivers of their underneath (yud’khilhu jannaatin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru); and whoever turns away, He will punish him with a painful punishment.

[50:9] And we have sent down a blessed water from the sky, then we have made to grow with it gardens and grains as the harvest (fa-anbatnaa bihi jannaatin wa-habba al-haseedi).

[51:15] Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and springs (inna al-muttaqeena fee jannaatin wa-`uyuunin).

[52:17] Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and bliss (inna al-muttaqeena fee jannaatin wa-na`eemin).

[53:15] Near it is a Garden of the Refuge (`indahaa jannatu al-mawaa).

[54:54] Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and river (inna al-muttaqeena fee jannaatin wa-naharin).

[55:46] And for whoever has feared, standing before his Lord is of two gardens (wa-li’man khaafa maqaama rabbihi jannataani).

[55:54] There are reclining on couches lined with brocade, and fruits at both gardens are reachable (wa-janaa al-jannatayni daanin).

[55:62] And other than these two, there are two gardens (wa-min duunihimaa jannataani).

[56:12] In gardens of the Bliss (fee jannaati al-na`eemi).

[56:89] Then joy and happiness, and a garden of Bliss (fa-rawhun wa-rayhaanun wa-jannatu na`eem).

[57:12] A day you see the believing men and the believing women will radiate their lights at their ahead and on their right. Good news for yourselves is the Day – gardens flowing the rivers of their underneath, are abiding therein forever (jannaatin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru khaalideena feehaa abadan). That which is the great success.

[57:21] You shall race towards forgiveness from your Lord, and a garden of its width is like width of the heaven and the earth (wa-jannatin `arduhaa ka`ardi al-samaa-i wal-ardi), has been prepared for those who have believed in God and His messengers. That is God’s grace, He gives to whomever He wills. God is Possessor of the infinite grace.

[58:22] You will not find a people who believe in God and the Last Day love whoever has opposed God and His messenger, even if they have been their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their relatives. Those – He has decreed the faith in their hearts and has supported them with inspiration from Him, and He will admit them into Gardens, flowing the rivers of their underneath as dwellers therein forever(wa-yud’khiluhumjannaatin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru khaalideena feehaa). And God has been pleased with them and they have been pleased with Him. Those are a party of God. No doubt! Indeed, a party of God – they are the successful ones.

[61:12] He will forgive your sins for you, and will admit you into gardens flowing the rivers of their underneath (wa-yud’khilukumjannaatin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru), and pleasant dwellings in gardens of Eden(wa-masaakina tayyibatan jannaatin `adnin). That is the great success.

[64:9] A day He will gather you to a Day of the Gathering, that is a day of the mutual blaming. Whoever believes in God and does as righteous, He will remit his evil deeds from him, and will admit him into gardens flowing the rivers of their underneath, are abiding therein forever (wa-yud’khiluhujannaatin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru khaalideena feehaa abadan). That is the great success.

[65:11] A messenger (message) recites God’s revelations to you is clear that it may bring those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds out of the darkness into the light. And whoever believes in God and does as righteous, He will admit him into gardens, flowing the rivers of their underneath, as dwellers therein forever (yud’khiluhu jannaatin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru khaalideena feehaa abadan). Certainly, God has provided good provision for him.

[66:8] O you who have believed, you shall repent to God a sincere repentance. It has been your Lord that He will remove your evil deeds from you, and will admit you into gardens flowing the rivers of their underneath (wa-yud’khilakum jannaatin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru). A day, God will not disgrace the prophet and those who have believed with him, who will radiate their light at their ahead and on their right. They will say: “Our Lord, perfect our light for us, and forgive for us; indeed, You are Powerful over everything.”

[68:17] Indeed, we have tested them like we had tested owners of the garden (kamaa balawnaa ashaaba al-jannata) when they swore certainly, they will pluck its fruit in the morning.

[68:34] Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord, are gardens of the Bliss (inna lil’muttaqeena `inda rabbihim jannaatin al-na`eemi).

[69:22] In a garden of elevated one (fee jannatin `aaleeyatin).

[70:35] Those will be honored in gardens (ulaaika fee jannaatin muk’ramuuna).

[70:38] Does every person expect among them that he is allowed to enter a garden of Bliss (ayatma`u kullu im’ri’in minhum an yud’khala jannata na`eemin)?

[71:12] “And He provides you with wealth and children, and He makes for you gardens, and He makes for you rivers (wa-yaj’al lakum jannaatin wa-yaj’al lakum anhaaran).”

[74:40] In gardens they will ask each other (fee jannaatin yatasaa-aluuna).

[76:12] And He will reward them garden and silk for what they have been patient (wa-jazaahum bimaa sabaruu jannatan wa-hareeran) .

[78:16] And greenery gardens (wa-jannaatin alfaafan).

[85:11] Indeed, those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds, for them are gardens flowing the rivers of their underneath (lahum jannaatin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru). That is the great success.

[88:10] In a garden of elevated one (fee jannatin `aaleeyatin).

[89:30] And enter My garden (wa-ud’khulee jannatee).

[98:8] Their reward with their Lord is gardens of Eden flowing the rivers of their underneath, are abiding therein forever (jannaatu `adnin tajree min tahtihaa al-anhaaru khaalideena feehaa abadan). God has been pleased with them, and they have been pleased with Him. That is for whoever has feared His Lord.

Summary

  • The righteous will enter gardens of Eden, and will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls, and their garments will be of silk. Their gates are open for them. Whoever has become righteous from their fathers, their spouses, and their children will also enter gardens of Eden.God has been pleased with them, and they have been pleased with Him. That is the great success.
  • There are joy and happiness in gardens of the Bliss. Every person expects that he is allowed to enter a garden of Bliss.
  • God has prepared gardens for those who have believed in God and His messengers. That is God’s grace, He gives to whomever He wills. God is Possessor of the infinite grace.
  • You shall repent to God a sincere repentance. It has been your Lord that He will remove your evil deeds from you, and will admit you into gardens flowing the rivers of their underneath.
  • Those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds, for them there are gardens flowing the rivers of their underneath, are abiding therein forever, which is the great success.
  • Those who are trustworthy and observe salat prayers consistently in a timely manner will be honored in gardens.
  • There is continuation of general description and specific description of gardens such as gardens of Eden, garden of the Bliss, gardens of the Refuge, garden of Elevation and My garden.
  • There are 4 gardens indicating that 2 gardens for the humans and 2 gardens for the Jinns having higher heaven and lower heaven for each group supported by the information that those who have believed will radiate their light at their ahead (higher heaven)and on their right (lower heaven).
  • The inspiration of the whole Quran in prophet’s soul has occurred near the garden of the Refuge.

In fact, gardens are allegorically described being the eternal resting place for the righteous as rewards.
